Star Wars the Old Republic had a similar if not higher number of likes on Facebook. It didn't translate into a successful subscription based MMO.

Infact SWTOR had a good launch in terms of sells, but the game wasn't that great, so the subscriptions went down fast.

But at least it sold pretty nice at launch cuz ppl where hyped... This is not happening with FFXIV: ARR atm :/

Of course, "likes" on Facebook just mean that people are interested in it... it doesn't mean that they'll like the game and will be willing to pay per month for it. BUT, FFXIV sold less than 25% of what SWTOR sold. It is an indication of how many will buy it and try it.

Keep in mind Facebook is an American based social network. Not many in Japan use it like we do. So basing the popularity on Facebook likes is a little lopsided. Just look at the views on YouTube. The JP videos sometime get twice as many views as the EN videos.

Oh you're right... So 70k likes are mixed from both ppl that already bought FFXIV 1.0 and from is waiting ARR...

It's a really really low number. This means that even ppl who already bought the 1.0 don't have too much interest in ARR...
Of course we're speaking of FB likes, it could mean a lot or nothing (nowadays it means a lot imho) ...

But anyway it's pretty strange that a main chapter of Final Fantasy Saga, has "only" 70k likes... :/

If FFXIV is out to prioritize cashing in on box sales they didn't learn anything from 1.0.

I'm pretty sure after all of this they are focused on putting out a game that people will think is worthy to subscribe to, something that takes a far greater commitment than "liking" on facebook. Or even buying a box at launch.

I think it would be a mistake to be trying to generate a huge amount of hype, when people following the game know it is too early, not enough has been proven about ARR to justify "hype". I'm super hyped about it because I played 1.0 and enjoyed it even most of the time, but I wouldn't sell it to a stranger based on that.

Square Enix needs to continue to demonstrate this game's worth, not hype it. Very little is known about TESO, just like very little of substance was known about SWTOR they were just hyped. SWTOR didn't back up that hype and had to go Free to Play, I don't think that is the path XIV wants to go down.

Well, FB gives at least, the number of ppl that are interested to the game.
Nothing of exactly of course, like: 1M likes? Ok we sold 1M of copies 100%.

But at least it gives the idea.
-TESO has 1M likes (so 1M of possible customers) ,
-ARR has 70k likes mixed from who already bought the game, and new players...

plus a bunch of unknown users who don't give likes or use facebook :||, i, for example, never gave a like on the facebook page, and still i'm an hardcore fan of this game.
There is something don't panic you about this game ? Seriusly.
