Yep, MMO's target is sustaining subs, not impulse buys on 1st day release, which is how console games work :x

expecting the marketing for a *massively multiplayer online role-playing game* built specifically with the intent to be a forever changing and replenishing game world... to be in any way similar to marketing for a standard, static one-off offline game
is categorically ridiculous
p.s.
hay gurl hay
I think Blizzard whether they wanted it or not got a console release for D3 lol, they should have kept it inside the oven longer XD.
Should have watched the server population lol
Well, It's both but it more on the Subscription side that needs to be worried about more. However, if you don't draw in a substantial amount of box buyers, then it could take awhile till the subs would be at where it's considered successful.
Wow they is only second to the end of the era trailer
Right, but as you said, it's not the main goal of any MMO to push box sales as much as hype the longevity of the game itself.

gw2 pushed box sales over longevity and, well, strangely it lost more than half its player base in just a couple months. (granted, there are other things which factored into this as well, but...)
I like how the accent wonderfully switches into a perfect American one at the end haha. In any case SE's situation is a little weird/different yeah? They already have thousands of players who have technically bought the game once and already know about it. So they need to advertize, but they don't need to go crazy with it probably.
I think part of SE's devious marketing plan is the reason why NDA will be lifted in phase 3. After phase 1 and 2 works out most of the kinks in the game, phase 3 allows everyone to come in and see what's going on and gaze at awe at the new and improved Eorzea. They're probably expecting people who blog and use social media to upload tons more videos of what would be perceived as excellent gameplay from the beta in order to entice old players who left 1.0 as well as prospective players who read the terrible reviews to give it another chance. Then again, I don't know anything about marketing so I might as well be blowing smoke out my rear.
