See I disagree that it doesn't work for the companies, and I would be interested in hearing from them about this topic because my thoughts (opinions) are:
- The company gets more money up front which they can use to both invest and earn interest off of the investment.
- Players now can play the game when they wish, but it also opens up the sale of expantion packs for the long run. If people keep playing the game, and it keeps expanding, the company still makes money off the sale of expantion pack.
- The player base who buys a lifetime sub, would feel more invested in the game world, and buy those expansion packs.
I think that if the price was right, there would be a market for this type of option. And while I don't have exclusive details in regards to what would be best for Square-Enix, I'd be interested in their take on the option.
And after all, if only five players were interested in this option, then I wouldn't think it would be worth while to setup that level of subscription, so I don't think this has a great possibility unless the player base really got behind it, it doesn't hurt to try.
