All I can say is. No matter how many times you use the "go here kill this, go there retrieve that" method. It always gets old and fast.. No game can do it right, because it's wrong.. There is nothing right about monotony. If a dev can't find a more exciting way to execute quests, they should consider a different career.

bring on the ffxi grind, ill take it any day over the popular crap we see in all the failing mmo's now. And dont even bring up WoW because its really just a solo mmo with no story, no story AT ALL.... Bring on the grind we had in ffxi so I can atleast meet some ppl and interact. Make quests for the main story. The casual players are just gonna have to deal with it. Who knows they may even make a beastmaster class or something so you can play all alone by yourself.

I dont see how killing NM's is going to be a great way to lvl up. And FATE we know nothing about and kinda sounds like that crap they did with ToAU, No thanks on both.

Because those are your words, not mine which ironically, you can't take yourself seriously because I see and seen quite a bit more of FFXI models in XIV than I did original ones.

That already makes it the "FFXI-HD" you seem to think people want.

Yeah except that was Tanaka lol ...he had 5+ years to do FFXIV and he went in a copy pasta spree and delivered a shitty game . Yoshi-P didn't feel like getting rid of 100% of it all idk people asked him not to or Wada..whoknows but that's as close to FFXI this game will get

Yeah I'm not getting why people are excited over the FATE system. It's just more of the common MMO standard these days. I don't even enjoy mechanics with these 'jump in / jump out, any and everyone can join and whack away mindlessly at some "NM"' fights. It may look cool the first time, but just like in Rift (the rifts..) and gw2 (the dragons, etc) it quickly becomes a cesspool of random button mashing (obviously with no strategy other than 'who can hit for the most dmg..) because no one person or group can hold it for themselves, ya kno.. Making it an actual challenge and entertaining. I'm hoping SE will make them much harder than HNM from XI, that require strategies no matter how many bodies you've got to throw at it.

As for the questing, I agree with you OP. For SE to feel that being able to quest ALLL the way to 50 is a good thing, has me worried for the type of MMO ARR will be. Thus far, I haven't enjoyed what I may have (or have not..) experienced of "leveling" in ARR. At the very least, I expect them to fix party based mob grinding to give at least equivalent exp to their beloved questing system. Still, it's early, as BETA hasn't even begun, so I hope they'll keep working on separating ARR from the rest of the MMO copies already out there.

    OPINION ON QUEST BASED LEVELing

we have it. lets hope it is pretty good. From What i've heard so far though, they've addressed one of my least favorite hiccups. In tera the sidequest cap is 30 quests at a time. In FFXIV i believe it is still 16. tera has you pingponging back and forth between npcs, sometimes they're far apart. Tera has you picking up like 11 quests at a time, going over your 7 quest tracker limit. from what i've seen ARR only has you getting 3 out of tera's 7 quest, so don't feel like you're suffering from ocd. Helps that the writing and translation in FFXIV is godlike.

    Actual problems with tera

It's a shame because tera has some great Meter management ideas, such as a resolve meter for defensive moves like backdashing and blocking and normal attacks regenerate mp and resolve. hp doesn't back up so managing it is pretty neato. but nothing really comes together into anything meaningful. once you throw a healer in there, nothing really matters. The 'action' combat just makes strategy simpler while adding very small amounts of execution to what you' would regularly be doing.

(I did read but quoting essence for bump )

+1'd agreed. I dont mind lots of little things to do but the cattle feeling must'n be present. One of the ways is to just make interesting quests that break usual patterns.

For example when I first did a leve I was like oh awesome the monster is running away thats cool SE - and I fought more.

Then... it was every leve and it was just frustrating BS, even if you killed him before he could run away he got help.

So quests that have surprising unexpected twists like say a main quest that tells you to go meet up with some friends but when you get there everyone is dead, or you are suddenly ambushed and carried away as prisoner.

(These obviously would need the "yes/no" would you like to start X event thing.. so you aren't caught awkwardly trying to do something else).

Mixing up the usual quest structure (GW2 and WoW cataclysm has some occasional examples I hope SE sees (I'm not saying copy everything just that they have created some non "Kill X monsters quests" that are fun)).

Mixing how you get the quest is also great. (killing monster, finding item, location mystery, ect ect, perhaps even while killing a beastmen who before dying asks you to do something- maybe surprising like you read the letter and go to X location with some food, a hume kid kid crawls out of the cave (so the beastmen was taking care of a kid from a nearby attack caravan)

Then of course finally just not using quests for everything.

TL;DR - Mix it up both in what quests offer and in what they dont offer - please dont cattle herde us lol

Sadly, between every MMO SE produced or published, if they take pride in a system, we will be using it whether we like it or not lol.

Maybe it's different now, but quite honestly, SE seems to put huge emphasis on the Quest system (since it brings it up to standard.)
