Yoshi-P has repeatably said his approach is "variety" in many different interviews. He said something recently like "Instead of seeing one path to climb for endgame, see it as different options to chose from and decided which aspect you'd like to focus on for that day."
Between personal housing, Notorious Monster hunting, FATEs, Chocobo breeding, crafting and gathering + Materia, PvP and a main storyline they promise to expand with each update like they've been doing with version 1.xx. It doesn't seem to me that their just going SWTOR/GW2 route of endless spamming one type of endgame content like dungeon crawling.
It's not. Hating on WoW is what the so-called "cool kids" like to do these days. It's just a fad, it will go away in time. lol
It's actually a pretty good game. The reaon I'm not subbed to it anymore is because I make it a rule to play only one P2P mmo game at a time, to conserve cash. But really, it's a good game. They have a free trial offer if you want to try it.
There is going to be a plethora of things to do, and if I am not mistaken something about the tower taking a year to complete, not sure if is in game a year to complete or on the developers side.
People who like WoW and people who don't are like people who like FFVIII and people who don't. Some think it's terribad, some people think it's gravy. The hate is legit. It's not. Hating on WoW is what the so-called "cool kids" like to do these days. It's just a fad, it will go away in time. lol

fuk nooo. this will guarantee a failed mmo. if you don't want hard content ...play and easy game. if you don't want long grinds, don't play mmo's. success of mmo's does mean large diversity for many types of players but sure as heck isn't nothing your trying to sell us in your post.
in general they should make everything separate. start a game from top to bottom for hardcore. then make that same content for casuals and the gimmie gimmies but that gear looks the same but it is only good for the casual kind of game play. the hardcore can play both content ..but casual can't go up wards to hard mode with it. something like that maybe.
make a tree of gear and content for large scale content. usually in ffxi we got 1 large scale content. (dynamisis, enerjah, limbus, sky, sea) make that gear only good for that type of content.
make a tree of gear for 8man content. (and when i say tree i don't mean sets of dinky gear but what ffxi and ffxiv hopefully has too. tons and tons of gears that are all great for different things and mobs and content)
make a tree of gear for casual content.
make a tree for solo content and aesthetics too.
make a tree of gear for pvp content. (lot of mmo's already doing this one, so it makes sense to try it out with hardcore and casual players to see if it keeps both of them in game)
tldr i'd never play a mmo like this, reality is hardcore players are the thread that keeps mmo's alive. they leave and you unravel the game and everyone will leave with them.

Trust me you would meet people with some of the best gear but when you try doing something with them you start asking yourself how they got it in the first place because of how horrible they are. Game is horrible because it doesn't require you to make clutch choices, as long as you know how to press 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4 and 5 every once in a while you're set. It doesn't require much moving around and most of it is everyone stacks on top of each other and zergs the boss.
Go watch some streams on Twitch and you will see that its nothing but rotations and ppl standing around is what the game is about.
Perhaps, but at least I don't see at least one "FFVIII is teh sux" thread or post every freakin day. lol
I just thought of this, I'm a SUPER casual player. Mostly solo actually, using pick up groups as a means to an end. I owe some favors here and there, some owe me favors. I haven't had an honest to god LS since 2008...ish? in FFXI and never really had one in FFXIV. Everything I had was the product of my own ability to just do what I pleased.
Also with the addition of the new content finder, casual players will be able to find events without shouting or waiting an UNGODLY amount of time. So I understand what you mean about the journey, but I think casual/solo will do just fine.
I halfway agree.
I'm a true computer nerd, and there have been times (when I was young) where I actually spent 8-12hrs a day in MMOs. However, this is over and will probably never be the case again. I'm full time working as a software engineer + studying computer science, and I love what I'm doing.
I still enjoy playing games, especially games with a long-time experience (mostly MMOs). I can't afford spending more than 1-2hrs maximum a day on average, though. For whatever reason, many people (not all) think that I'm 'casual' now. This is a weird definition; just because I can't afford investing large amounts of time, this makes me casual?
Not at all. I'm hardcore. I take my gaming and gaming experience seriously, I'm not playing games just for giggles. I hunt for the most difficult achievements, top highscores, and whatnot. I only play one game at a time, preferably for at least a year.
I don't agree with making top rewards obtainable by just having game time (this applies to both 'hardcore' (long grind) and 'casual' (Azurymbers's idea) ways of game time investment). We need more skill-based gameplay. There's nothing wrong with having some content that caters to both, but the vast majority of it should be skill-based. Skill usually builds up with time. The calculation should be something like: spend 1hr a day, and you are ready for the most difficult content within 1-2 years. Of course, new content will be introduced, which requires either an even higher level or different kind of skill.
That's my opinion on this topic
