For you. I made serious cash farming. Got well into the millions. And didn't have to be bothered with "Look for ingredient A, Buy ingredient B, blah blah blah. Again, it's all about preference.

It's pretty profitable as-is. I had to pay some serious cash at times for crafted weaponry, items, and even food!

Also we shouldn't forget about commerce! The art of trading, buying and selling is a very valuable skill to have.

Indeed. One thing I will admit though is that farming is a much more lazy way to go about it, lol. Well crafted items, however, sell for a LOT of gil. So I might pay a bit more attention to crafting in ARR. It's just that I get antsy and want to go adventuring after the 20th crafted item. I have mmo ADD, or something like that.

You need a combination of both, and the more efficient you are the more you profit.

None of the above, I prefer to gamble my winnings in hopes of tripling my fortune!
*fails triple meld* Sigh, I guess lucks not on my side today...

Though in all seriousness, farming seems to give me immediate profit untill my crafts and gathering skills started to obtain a decent level. Though, it would be fun if they implemented FFXII's way of chain farming to make it less monotonous.

I prefer gathering myself, but I try to adjust to the market as needed. Farming is kind of a last resort thing for me though. Something about killing mobs for hours at a time just bores me.

Both. For starters, to be self sufficient you need to farm to craft anyway. But, just like in the real, game economies fluctuate and what can make money today may not do as well tomorrow. Sometimes you might find selling the materials is better profit than using them to make and sell items. Sometimes the opposite is true.

Better to be on top of it from all angles so that when it does change you can easily adapt.

The first part of that isn't quite true. Depending on your ablility to find the lowest prices for materials and create a profit for the finished item, you don't really have a need for farming.
