Traveling in XI did take some time at first when you had just started the game. But that makes since: you have to travel somewhere by foot (or choco) at least once before you can instantly teleport there.

After you had gained some levels and advanced in game (chocobo licence, enough rank for airship pass, teleport spells, outpost missions, sky teles etc. etc.) it became a lot faster and was just fine in my opinion.

Preypacers post was really good, agreed 100%!

This is one of the things I enjoyed in FFXI. You gradually received better and better travelling options. You had to work for them to obtain them. What FFXI did well back in the days was set goals for players to aim for. It was like a journey where you started with just your two legs before ending with all kinds of different travelling options.

I can remember how I desperately wanted to get high enough in level to reach jeuno and start the chocobo quest. To avoid all the mob aggro. Afterwards I wanted to finish the missions so that I could finally get an airship pass. While trying to go around the world and obtain every crystal at each crag so that I could teleport there(through the help of a whm). Bit by bit more options opened yet left space for enough travelling, to the point that once I got bored of walking through a zone, I actually had ways to quickly get through them.

Also I'm afraid that we'll never again see our characters ride boats and airships. No, I don't mean a cutscene. I mean actually riding the ferry/airship and enjoying the scenery as our characters headed to their next destination.

Journeys can turn into adventures a lot of the time, if you teleport everywhere then you could be missing out on something fun along the way!
I have to agree with this completely. The journey is definitely part of the experience. It provides time to discuss strategy, plan ways to distribute loot, and work out party members' roles, as well as providing opportunities to get to know players you're grouped with (for people who care about that kind of thing).

XI's system for getting around was pretty solid.
Teleports to Crags, outpost warps, and airships, as well as Chocobos...

I hope they find a good way to balance all of these aspects in ARR.

I really don't see the problem with teleports if you've been to the destination once. Sometimes you just don't have the time to ride chocoback everywhere. As another poster put it, a group isn't going to want to wait for you in front of a dungeon while you're choco'ing from wherever the hell you are. As far as I'm concerned, the anima system pre-Hamlet was limiting enough that you had to ration it out, else you'd blow through it all and you would be forced to travel by land.

At launch weapons would lose durability for what seemed like every point of damage you did to a mob. It was common to carry two to three backup weapons when you went out for a long party. A mage could blow through the durability of there weapons in about two to three mobs if not sooner. Curing other players also damaged weapons again at a rate 1 for 1.

Instant kill boss button because I don't have time to keep trying if I lose the first time. Nobody else has to use it though, just the people who don't have time like me. There will also be a 100% drop rate button as well. Actually when I'm making my character there will be a 100% Progress finished option that i will choose, log in and log out because I finished the game in like 10 minutes (while creating my character). Damn, I'll have this game finished within the 30 day trial period! This will be one less thing to take up my precious time!

Playing ffxi for a short while, I really do appreciate not being able to teleport anywhere at any time. It's like having a cheat in the game. Sure it's fun to be able to have god-like skills and instantly be in any far corner of the map at any time, but it takes away the depth to the game and cheapens the experience of travel. I think airships, mounts and boats should be enough for the majority of travel in game. If an NPC (such as a moogle in town) had the ability to offer teleports, that would even be OK.

I think one of the other annoying things teleport did was allow players to teleport the whole party at once. This cheapened the experience for travel, especially for new players who had never been to a place before. "Oh, the story said I need to walk to Ul'dah? Ain't nobody got time for that. I'm going to find someone to teleport me there for free." Really ruins the new user's experience to get to know the world and the maps if they never actually ventured out there.

Of course, I know I can just walk places myself and I don't have to teleport, but if everyone else is able to do it, i'd be the fool not to use this system.

I've not read all the responses, so forgive me if someone said this, but I'm ok with teleporting everywhere, as long as you have reached the destined point first. No piggie backing anyone, if you have not reached the point, sorry you can't go. This is how it was in FFXI, you had to reach the crystal first before you can be teleported to your desired point.

Except in FFXIV it is x1000 times more dangerous to do so...
