I'd say the events are canon, but not everything.
The canon part is that there's an increased monster and imperial activity.
Shitloads of imperials inside towns and Naels copies are just fun.

It's cool guys. I got this.

Real Life > FFXIV
Everything is canon until after the 11th. It's not until after the 11th, if you login to 1.0 when the servers come back online, that you'll have to ignore inconsistencies in the story. Yoshi has said this himself.
The story isn't finished and this is the big finale. We may not fully understand everything that's going on yet, but it's happening and SE hasn't abandoned its own story.

We've never actually seen Nael die anyway. We only saw him getting absorbed by Dalamud.
So as Dalamud is getting closer it torments us by spawning all the deepvoid slaves and Nael clones in town.
That also explains why there are 3 Naels running around at once sometimes.

On a storyline related angle, because of Dalamud's proximity, the world's creatures are going insane and are being driven by Dalamud to attack the three cities (though I guess really its only Uldah since its the most commonly used). No where is safe, Dalamud is on the verge of falling through the clouds and denziens of the void are spilling out into our dimension seeking to tear apart everything they can.
A second thought on that - just because they are coming from the Void, it could be said they are drawn towards the most active inhabited places, that being the cities.
A more likely scenerio, which is not story related..is its the end of the freaking world and they wanted to do something to represent pure chaos.

Phoenix Downs dont bring the dead to life...
*hp falls below 1, falls to the ground incapacitated....someone uses phoenix down..hp is restored and fight continues...*
Yeah, sure, if you say so.
