It probably won't not does it need that to be successful. Heck mcdonalds may be number one but wendys burger king hardees still make loads of money too.
Ffxiv a realm reborn will do just fine.
Number 1 is a perk not the only measure of success.

I don't see why ppl are calling the game a WoW clone, because of jumping? The non-stumble animation? Ability to backpedal? There is still a lot of testing to be done, it was a demo to showcase the fact how much the game will be changing.
Get over it, WoW is a gold standard in MMOs, I've played many games & have friends/other players who agree WoW just "got things right." Gear set was never an issue in WoW. Multiple items? I'm not even gonna go there, it's 2012.
I will agree that a HUGE part of FF is the "environmental feel" being the look & feel of the game. The "stumble" animation ppl are arguing about does add to the game, as dumb as it may sound it does have it's place. The "time of day", weather effects, etc. Are things I haven't seen at all/rarely in other games.
What FF developers & producer need to do, is incorporate the key features into FFXIV that will make the game overall better not to simply pull players but appeal to the FF fanbase. I agree, most of the ppl who play FFXI & FFXIV are loyal fans, and many are brought to the game by friends.
The depth (immersion) of the game needs the work: explorability of content, character customization, gear progression, challenging/recreational group play, sense of accomplishment.
Short Answer: CHINA. Yes.
Longer Answer: Yes. WoW is all well and good, and so are Star Wars and Guild Wars etc etc, but each of them has some big problems and sadly, it won't be hard for ARR to surpass their quality.

Make it happen.
Star Wars was crap, GW2 is still very new & alrdy has some not so great qualities. It seems simple but not many games can top WoW in many areas of gameplay. FFXIV was/is a disappointment in that it still handles like FFXI and was made in 2010. WoW is probably the best MMO for "control" & smoothness & doesn't jack up your frame rates.
FFXIV demo from gamescon looked a lot better. But the fact it's such a newer MMO and sucked worse than much older MMOs is just embarrassing, given the fact they have FFXI as a base reference.. total embarrassment.
Shouldnt have to compare a NEW MMO to an older one and saying "it'll be better"....
There are A LOT of gamers out there STARVED for a good game & many end up game hopping or "settling." IMO the ppl who have been playing FFXIV from start settled & luckily game has been getting better.
I disagree I think there will be more people coming to FFXIV and leaving FFXI behind. They ruined that game with abyssea expansion. Not to mention the graphics are way outdated. I went back to XI the other day to check things out and get that fishing ring from the event that was going on, I logged in and was like "eeew......". I have been way too spoiled with these new games like FFXIV and GW2 that going backwards is just not an option. I know there are a lot of people out there who feel the very same way.
As for all the GW2 haters, you should really play the game before judging it. Another thing, when WoW started it did not have anywhere close to 2 million subscribers. GW2 has been out for about 2 weeks now and has already reached 2 million players maybe even more. The game has gotten a rating of 94-96% on most if not all review websites. It is the highest rated PC game on the market right now. I can assure you that is not bec the game sucks. The game is actually pretty amazing. If SE doesn't straighten things out I will most likely be making it my main game. I bet GW2 can get close to 10 million subscriptions just from word of mouth alone within the next couple of years.

Contemplated buying it (I played GW1 for a long time) & wasn't impressed w/ the pvp aspect, never actually played it but watched beta weekends & footage, still occasionally watch some live streams. I have a RL friend who plays it.. The knockdown stun i thought was a lil dumb 9yes thats 1 small issue - supposedly they're removing it?) But my friend when I asked how the game was said "it's okay." And also if you're here you're obviously not play right now :-P haha

The knockdown is a big part of many professions, it gives them a chance to control opponents and pseudo tank in pvp, so I doubt they'd remove it. Without knockdown hammer would be virtually useless with Warrior and Guardian, and other utility skills would be hampered. There's ways to get around knockdown though, if you're prepared for it.
EDIT: sorry quoted wrong person on accident too lazy to change it :P but hopefully he / she knows im talking to them.
Not to insult your friend but has he even reached lvl 80 yet? As for the knockdown / stun, they are vital in any PVP game. If you dont pvp then I can understand why dont get the concept of it. Like the poster above me said, there are ways to get out of it or prevent it all together (for only a short time obviously) which is the beauty of pvp you never know what you will encounter. As for the WvW (World vs World vs World) its pretty fun actually.
