Thanks especially to Mamba, Starlord, and all the other people being understanding. Oh, and thanks to those that pointed out sound aggro and walking. Having played FFXI for the better part of a decade, I assumed Imps and Ahriman detect by sight. It probably wouldn't have saved me though, since I teleported in and was already running in the split seconds before Atomos and its horde were visible to me, so I pretty much ran two steps and was face-down before I knew what hit me. Next time I'll see if they'll let me stroll into camp.
All of you dicks saying "New players need to suck it up, you joined late so screw you, endoftheworldlol" are the same people that are gonna be condescending to ARR newcomers, and that's the last thing this game needs. Keep it up, when ARR hits and all the new players find are a bunch of capped douchebags not giving a damn about them, that could very well be the last nail in the coffin. New players are the only thing standing between you and the death of FFXIV, so cherish every one.
And to the "Just go somewhere else" crowd, that was impossible. In both instances I was doing quests that sent me SPECIFICALLY to a camp where Atomos now spawns to get a cutscene or talk to someone, so I had no choice but to go there right in the middle of it all. I only had an hour to play, could've cleared a couple more quests, but I spent a decent chunk of it face-down in the dirt waiting for everything to despawn so I could warp back out and get my damn cutscene during the ~5 minutes of peace.
It would be an entirely different story if they'd kept Atomos away from camps where low-level content *MUST* be completed, rather than *CAN* be completed. This has nothing to do with lacking resourcefulness, this is all about SE putting time-wasting hindrances right on top of existing low-level content and not giving the player any choice in the matter. I was already aware of everything, having run into Atomos at a far-off camp before, but to find it at the very first Ul'dah camp really seemed like a slap in the face for new people. I can only imagine how a fresh new player might feel. If it were my first day of the free trial and I was heading out to Black Brush to get a handle on things, having that ruined by content meant only for high-level players would be a major turn-off. Do none of you remember your first day? Your first leve or quest? Now imagine it with Atomos in the way. Not a great first impression, I'm sure.
