you think maybe that's why releasing a cgi trailer first, at all, is a horrendously stupid idea?
Because people that don't play or follow the game really close would have no idea about such stuff.
A lot of the time when I see negative posts on XIV articles, my first thought is NCsoft employee.
1) It's pretty self explanitory
2) compared to the intricacy of other FF stories, FFXIV's story is on par with a children's coloring book.
I told my sister about 2.0 and she said, "I thought that was just a rumor?"
Even tho, SE has been putting messages in the inboxes of former players, most of the press releases and interviews were viewed by people who were already into the game and on websites like the lodestone forums. They were mostly in Japanese, and were directed to the current players. The rest of the gamers who quit FFXIV and moved on have NO clue what has been going on for a year.
This is supposed to be the beginning of the promotions directed at the people who aren't playing. The trailer is a tap on the shoulder, "Hey, remember this? Wanna check it out?". Some folks will decline the offer (Not interested), but others will be at least curious and go to the website.
Here's an unfortunatly rather negative reaction from GameTrailers:

Though I have to agree that these CG-only trailers don't do much for me.
EDIT: Interestingly enough, there are actually many people defending the game in the comments.

Huh? What? You were talking about changes that happened already and what's coming in 2.0, so I assumed you were talking about stuff like patches and gameplay changes that are coming, to which I once again say: someone not following closely/playing the game will not really know and understand that stuff and its importance. Dunno why you're suddenly talking about plot.
Also intricacy and FF story doesn't really fit too much in one sentence (oh god I better ready my shield :P)
I wonder about the game footage.
If the battle system and animations have improved a lot then it might be possible to have footage that looks dynamic.
If the battle system has just been tweaked then no amount of editing can make it look ...epic.
I still think XIV release trailer was the best piece of pr for this game. It had in-game footage but most of all it had a FF feeling in it due to the music mash-up of answers and that other track.
I don't remember the melody of this trailer and the feeling is a bit more "Beowulf 2" (or any other Hollywood film) than Final Fantasy.
I'm goin off on a tangent here but getting melancholic mood in trailers has worked in past FF games so well I don't see why not bring up that theme again.
XII onwards it seems FF is all star wars explosions and J-pop rainbows. They used to take pride in being different in a quiet way.
In regards to sub plots, I'd say pre xi was pretty intricate. At least for video game standards.Huh? What? You were talking about changes that happened already and what's coming in 2.0, so I assumed you were talking about stuff like patches and gameplay changes that are coming, to which I once again say: someone not following closely/playing the game will not really know and understand that stuff and its importance. Sure the same guy with a chocobo avatar posting 8 times :|
That is also an issue some fans tend to forget when posting trying to defend XIV. Everyone is well aware that there are a lot of blind fanboys that would defend anything that SE makes.
I am not saying that this is the case here, but if I was a non-XIV player and would read the comments from actual players who are claiming that the game is amazing blablabla, I wouldn't really give them any credits.
The average XIV player will tell you good things about "his" game, just like a WoW player would, a GW2 player would and so on. After all if you play and pay for something it means you like it, so you're expected to have a positive attitude toward that product.
I would rather trust new players (or player who came back after a long absence) who would post comments like "I just (re)started playing and it's not as bad as people says", rather than "I am a XIV guru, been there since day 1, done all events, got a relic, all jobs 50, etc. and XIV is a good game!"
I often see XIV players trying to defend the game on external sites by bashing others non-players or casual players with arguments such as "You have less experience than me so I know better". Yeah but having more experience also mean your feedback has a way higher chance of being biased.

You have to stop and realize that this is a video to catch the attention of people who have no idea about FFXIV, haven't heard anythig from XIV for a long time or have left and awaiting ver 2.0 release.
This teaser does just that, it brings the unknowing up to speed and lets people know FFXIV: a realm reborn is due soon.
Thats it.
SO the next teaser they put out might be more CGI mixed with game play (remember Yoshi said they are still working on the graphics) do you want the real deal of gameplay footage or some alpha state stuff?
They didn't release this and say "FFXIV: a realm reborn, available now for PS3 and PC"
They released it and said "FFXIV: a realm reborn, coming soon to PS3 and PC"
We'll see game play soon enough. This release was just to remind people ver 2.0 is on its way.
