Maybe you should have explored a bit before passing judgement. As a side note, the path between gridania and ul'dah is entirely unhindered by "big bad wolves that can kill you in a single attack". If you meet wolves, you're going the wrong way.@ Abriael,
I was talking about Gridania, where I came across only five other players. The desert camps might be busier, and great for you all out there, but Gridian was a wasteland of players and even though some of the other posters have replied with better start zones, if there's almost no one in one area and the game can't suggest it, why should I restart again so soon, or bust a gut trying to get past wolves that can kill me in a single attack to travel there on foot?
No one likes Sheetstainia because it's literally a grid on the map. Want to go from Point A to Point B? Enjoy zig zagging your way there, go up a ramp, then down a ramp, and zig zag some more through tunnels just to get there which is in total possibly 200+ yalms which in equivalency could just be 50 yalms in total for LL or Ul'dah.
No one likes that place, the terrain is redundant, rehash, and to this day I hope SE makes a special event where Shi- I mean, Gridania just gets burnt down by the Empire and turned into a volcanic zone.
Then Jueno appeared out of nowhere and everyone was happy suddenly.
Gosh darn it.
If you're referring to busting a gut trying to walk to Ul'dah, the main path to get there is completely safe. If any monsters that DO aggro happen to make it to the main path, they're easy to avoid, especially with the blaring red aggro icon next to their name.@ Abriael,

EDIT: Ah, guess Abriael beat me to it, haha.
Gridania in itself is not a "wasteland":
FFVII's desert under Golden Saucer? That's a wasteland -- a better word to describe Gridania's situation would be lifeless. An uninhabited wilderness
I'm pretty sure everyone knew what we meant when we said "wasteland," even if it isn't the dictionary definition of it. But even then, we were just using it as a metaphor. Plus you missed the rest of the definition, which would further enhance the metaphor:
No need to get your panties all up in a bunch over technical stuff.barren: an uninhabited wilderness that is worthless for cultivation
Give the guy a break. He was simply noting his observations. Camp Horizon is the busiest place in all of Eorzea... and there's like 25 people in that picture. Gridania is a ghost town.
This game is not quite as successful as you believe it to be...
so leme get this straight. you start in the most unliked starter city (ironicly windy was the same way) complain about killing squerrils ( i see no difference then killing rats/rabbits in ffxi) then say the game hasn't improved. But you didn't take time to fully explore it. Sorry but kinda seems useless to call a game something after only seeing 1 location. They are remaking the area around gridania and changing the combat system it was just delayed due to the disaster in japan. I personally don't think you gave it a decent re-try.

Yet:
Isn't that "getting caught up over technical stuff"? Also I grew up on a farm, pretty sure Gridania and Black Shroud isn't COMPLETELY worthless for cultivation.
I'm not English native, so no, not "everyone knows what is meant by using a certain term". Maybe people who speak English natively could link it to a metaphor, but nonnatives tend to read the word and context more closely in order to understand and the way I read it, it can't realistically be called a wasteland, but lifeless more than anything, since while there's NPCs and the like, it lacks "life".
who cares what you think. Dont like it dont play it. But do not say there has not been improvements since launch because there has been a whole lot.
thats why this next month is so crusial because 6 months have been "wasted" to the outside observer. The big changes to the battle system are going to be on patches 1.17 (+ 1.17a) and 1.18
This next set of patches feels like a game changer to me, anyone else feel like these are the most important patches to date?
