FFXI hands you drops, allows you to go into god mode inside and outside of Abyssea.
True Story.
Ok, a lot of people are in defense of this saying that a) the drop rates are "not that bad" and b) if you don't want to put in the time you don't deserve to "have the best stuff" in the game.
The bottom line is, when did THIS become acceptable fun? Really, in 2012 with all the mmo's that have come and gone and all the examples why is THIS the BEST they can come up with. Hamlet Defense is void of interest, and that is because nobody wants to sink 300 runs in just for a small chance of getting the drop. This is not fun, this is tedious. I don't care if "that is how mmo's work". With all the talk about 2.0 being new and a fresh start and a game changer, this is just one horrible step backwards. Completing a simple task 1000 times is not a challenge, completing a complex and difficult task once IS!
There is absolutely no reason why this needs to be done this way. Why can't we have a series of complicated missions, with engaging story arch's and various path's we have to follow. Adversaries we have to engage in that relate to the independent story lines for the various jobs? Why can't they make use of popular game mechanics and the things we do like and are enjoying in order to implement this Relic gear quest.
So you have 400 Hamlet Defense runs under your belt, that doesn't make you a better player, it just means you have more free time.
Sorry, this is a fail.
~EDIT~
Oh let's not forget...this is the flag quest for Relic so this is just the pre-req for what no doubt will be another even more tedious time sinc with absolutely no time and effort put forth to engage the player base what so ever.

Unless the drop rates go up significantly with higher hamlet levels (assuming we even get them soon) this is going to be impossible to pug and be a really retarded grind.
I am fine with these weapons being long term if we are working towards it and not depending on a RNG system like dungeons. I want to know what I put in everyday is going towards something, not pulling a lever on a slot machine and hope for the best.

I don't give two fucks about these weapons. I'm not big into mindless grinds which is what hamlet is. The stats will also not justify the time requirement. They will be better than anything that is currently available but it will not be significant enough to justify the grind.
Of course all the grinders will grind it out, get the weapon and then surprise! Find out they have nothing to do except stand around in Uldah trying to look cool. 2.0 will be released the cap will raise and better weapons will be easily obtainable that are superior to the relics.
You people are like crackheads sometimes. SE dangles a cool looking piece of gear in front of you, you fanboy over it, grind it out then find that you've wasted over a month doing something that really has no benefits.
In 2012 a repetitive gear grind is not the way to make a compelling long-lasting MMO. Yes, there should be difficult to obtain weapons but this should be done through challenging battles and utilizing the crafting system to get people involved. Not rely on mindless grinds to procure a piece of gear that will serve very little purpose when 2.0 is released.
A gear grind is indicative of the old-school Japanese developer mentality that has grown stale over time and contributed to the stagnation of the Japanese game industry. The sad part is some of you clowns defend this design choice.
I want a difficult challenging game. Hamlet and procuring seals is not challenging.
P.S. I lol at the morons who let their LS lead or whoever get priority on a drop. This kind of crap is what ruined FFXI endgame for some. New members would be forced to act as slaves for the leaders to get them fully geared out. By the time they were finished, something new would come along and the less influential members would be left in the dust, their efforts having been put to waste.

Oh the irony is thick with this.
Your playing a MMO, in the same terms you are wasting months doing something that really has no benefit. Some people do it for fun, some people just do it to kill time.
Don't like the content that's fine but don't get all upity on everyone who feels this is worth the effort.
Apparently if you got a really coordinated group you can get 50k-60k runs get a big chest and the drop rate is like 10% then.Ok, a lot of people are in defense of this saying that a) the drop rates are "not that bad" and b) if you don't want to put in the time you don't deserve to "have the best stuff" in the game.

I knew this response was coming. Kudo's for throwing it out so early as useless as it is.Oh the irony is thick with this.

Any video game is inherently a waste of time we all know this. In an MMO the trick is creating content that is worthwhile outside of having you look cool that contributes overall to your progression and makes the player feel that their investment is worthwhile. In an interesting and compelling fashion. This is not compelling nor challenging.
Sighing in relief that you've finally procured an item through luck is not good game design. Trying to defend it otherwise is insane. Do this grind, enjoy it (somehow) but don't fucking excuse this bullshit as good game design.
At least in FFXI there were drops that required teamwork and hard work to get. Yes, there were grinds but it wasn't 100% grind like all the current content here is.
