It's really hard to offer any useful advice when I can't see exactly what you were doing, but seeing "read your tooltips" makes me think perhaps using something like Thrill or Reprisal on their own, as if it was a big defensive cooldown.

I've seen an influx of tanks recently that will wall pull on DRK and then try to tank it with only dark mind (and die in 2 GCDs) as if that 10% mit is going to do anything when they have their 40% available. It's like they know which buttons are defensives but haven't bothered reading what they actually do.
