At this point I'm convinced that a restriction lift, or at least more freedom, is their "break glass in case of emergency" device when the game is on an abysmal low.

Either this, or a way to soften the blow when they announce something lackluster at a fanfest for the next expansion.
"We will further make jobs into soulless husks, and remove materia from the game. Oh we will also remove glamour restrictions!"
Queue applause as Square pats themselves on the back for "listening to the fans" when they inevitably do something like this.
I thought that for a long time. At this point, either SE can't recognize the time is now or (the more likely imo) they are just stubborn and don't want to do it.
Nah, that'd be 'EX trial where we fight Sephiroth FF7'
Kinda telling that the biggest applause across all three of the DT Fanfests went to '2 dye channels on gear'Either this, or a way to soften the blow when they announce something lackluster at a fanfest for the next expansion.

TBH, I wouldn't miss it. Materia is a highly uninspired system that gives a very fake sense of customization or straightforwardly a new player trap when it comes to tenacity. It would be a shame to lose the system instead of having it rebuilt into something cool, though.
I also wouldn't really miss materia as it is, but I'd much rather have a more involved stat system where having different types of materia would matter rather than ditching it outright; removing it is just Square admitting they would rather dumb the game down more than actually make something worthwhile. I'd also like to have materia that would give varying traits like higher movement speed, cooldown reduction on abilities, increased resource generation (the various 0-100 gauges via a "mastery" stat of sorts), etc.
But yes, back to the topic at hand: I still can't use my level 62 maiming boots on my tanks yet Square. There's already so much overlap from the different roles that any use of "role identity" makes no sense. If a clear WHM styled gearset can also be made for all healers, then that also makes AF gear up for grabs as far as I'm concerned. Hell, most ranged and striking sets would look far better on RDM than most casting sets.
Honestly, if they don't want to allow this because of that stupid excuse of "BLM can't look like an armored tank" (which is insane given we can already with several items...) - AT LEAST let the groups that usually share the same models like... share the glamours lol.
So, the restriction would be lifted between Caster + Healing / Scouting + Aiming + Striking / Fending + Maiming.
It's the ideal perfect scenario? Not really, but at least better than nothing.
