This is a normal occurrence and wasn't personally decided by Yoshi P as a response to WoW. Demolition being enabled is the default state of things.

Bring back 6.0 Dragoon. I want my job back.
Which makes you think that possibly they are already making another mmo, you have to remember that the development of a game goes from 6 to 10 years nowadays, I would not be surprised if in 10 years they say "we have been developing this mmo since 2025".
Yoshida said in an interview back in the StB days that he wanted to make a whole new mmo that was pure high fantasy and was more it's own thing. iirc he said he would not have the same races as XI/XIV and absolutely no tech, aliens or anything of the sort and be in its very own world without crossovers, call backs and such. But who knows. After having him at the helm from 2.0-7.0 I frankly do not think he has the creativity for it.
Being able to just pause housing demolition for half a year makes me question why it even needs to happen at all.
Housing didn't have auto demolition at first but people complained about the empty plots from people that stopped playing long ago taking up space and that's why we have the auto demolition timer today.

Housing demolition exists to open up houses for other players to bid on.
It works like this.
Person wins a house.
They have their house as long as they keep playing and going in their house.
If they stop playing or stop going in their house, their house goes up for bidding again.
Now someone else wins the house, and they get to keep it for as long as they're playing and going in it.
Its a house recycle system, because they did housing SO BADLY that this is the only way other people can get a house.
"Just leave it off!" Ok, then no one else aside from everyone who already has a house will be able to get a house again. Housing becomes a 'veterans only' thing. Ok. Someone who quit years ago shouldnt have an abandoned house sitting while someone paying and playing today wants one and cant get one.
Yes we should have instance housing. We should have 40 more wards added. We should have world peace, and world hunger should be solved too.
Until they're willing to fix that, we're stuck with demolition to give other players a chance at having a house.
While with tech today, you can, on demand open and remove instances dynamicly and it can even be automatic. Its a house recycle system, because they did housing SO BADLY that this is the only way other people can get a house.

Say you have 4 shards, when shard 4 reach 90% occupation, create shard 5, when shard 5 is 90% busy, create 6...
When 1 2 3 has empty spots, lock 4, 5, 6 so people fills 1 2 3... then unlock again.
While we are stuck with SE manually opening and closing channels with patches.
Wether you like WoW or not depends on what content you prefer and how you prefer it.
For instance: FFXIV made me fall in love with housing. Because of this, the moment WoW releases its polished housing to the public, I am very likely going to switch. Unless Blizzard decides to gate their awesome new housing system behind some silly 'but you need to do XYZ for 20 weeks to unlock all the features huehuehuehue' mechanic. In case they do, I'm just going to wait longer until those restrictions are gone or partially lifted (Blizzard always does that xD).
Its hard for me to buy the reasoning when there's entire wards dominated by a single person that they refuse to do anything about. Demolition is there to keep people hostage, I don't believe anything else at this stage.Housing demolition exists to open up houses for other players to bid on.
