If you are from the US you might not know that this term 'scab' is very old, very old, in countries with strong trade unions. I see it used so often looking in historical newspapers back to 1910 and earlier, like: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/a...earchTerm=scab

When the union goes on strike solidarity dictates that everyone is out in support of one another, and a picket line is usually set up so that allied unions also know not to enter the site. Strike breakers are called scabs. Scabs who cross strike picket lines can do so freely, but there are consequences as they find they are basically blacklisted from further employment.
