It's not a controversy, people are misinformed it also didn't help SE changes around elemental affinities at one point.

I honestly have no clue when this came into effect. I concede that I was wrong and I'm pleased to see this is how it works.

One thing I always loved about Pokemon is the devs understood that elements had multiple weaknesses and strengths.

Water cools Fire down, but it also corrodes the Earth which can also starve out fire; Fire melts ice, but can also burn nature up. ETC.
