Exhibit A: Five females, a baby dragon, and another "person" that is drawn ambiguously, most closely resembling a chest-bound non-binary.

Exhibit B: That is not the face of a male. Val's outfit even appears to be designed with what could easily be interpreted to be a chest binder.

I'll agree with it being not a male face, but isn't his outfit just a redesign of Hero's outfit from SD1/Legend of Mana? Same hair and all too.

Not to mention Teardrop Crystal also having the similar outfit minus the turban/chestwrap.

Came to obvious bait thread just to say that Cloud crossdressing was actually just for shits and giggles. You know, for comedy.

Crossdressing has been in comedy for quite a while, and in the mid-late 90s to the early 2000s even, there were a lot of comedy shows/sketches/events that featured it.

Dave Chapelle even had a citation about one of the reasons he turned down the 50 million dollar contract to renew Chapelle show being due to the studio pushing really hard for him to do a crossdressing sketch. (He was firmly against doing that, believing it to be lowbrow humor)

Part of Cloud's bit is that the bad guys at the time were licentious enough to either not notice or not care, until the dress came off and the illusion was undone.

The short of it is, it was never an event that was a positive portrayal for LGBT. It was an event laughing at their expense. In the same way that the Golden Saucer "date" with Barrett was also a play for comedy, rather than genuine romantic teasing.

    ------------

On another note, some other poster in the thread made the assertion that the Amano "concept" art has featured Bishounen and Biseinen boys forever, and while that's partially true, it doesn't take into consideration that his artwork didn't come with the games commonly on the stateside until Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy VI's artwork was actually based off of the in game sprites not the other way round, so his art isn't even always the original concept. It's just that his art is heavily intertwined with the games, as the devs for the series have wanted it to be.

So the first Amano art to show up with a game state side was in the FFVI instruction booklet for the then titled Final Fantasy III on the Super Nintendo, and there was a lot greater variety to the characters. Like Gau isn't androgynous or bishi. Sabin(Mash) is muscular in the extreme, to the point of looking dopey in one art and then looking somewhat rough but debonair on the same page. Locke is as close as a Final Fantasy character gets to being androgynous until the playstation era, really.

Are... are you just ignoring the entire section with the Honeybee inn? maybe the original was done for laughs, but that is not true of the remake. I would also like to point out that maybe the original date with barret was a joke, but have you actually played Rebirth and gotten his date? it is extremely wholesome, and more of a bromance moment than a date.

Nah, I haven't had the desire to waste my money on FFVII expanded universe content.

Particularly not FFVII Re-Milk the Fanboys.

Wake me up when they remake 9 or actually give us an FFVI port that does the SNES version proper justice.

If he played it you'd say he was hate-playing. Moreover why would anyone with a functional brain spend money on something they don't expect to enjoy?

Dude. FFVI was only the third FF game stateside. That's only 2 games in the US not being initially released with Amano artwork. And the Playstation Era was literally the next game after that.

You're also leaving out all the bishi guys with long-flowing ponytails: Edgar, Setzer, and Kefka. Also, the character portraits in-game used the Amano art and Locke's subsequent appearances in 3D are based off his Amano art.

Just goes to show how long the agenda has been around.
