I'd always assumed they were just hired hands. Let's say you're in charge of a city, and this dude's been showing up and shouting about the end of the world and making your power structure a little wobbly. What do you do?

Hire people to shout back at him that he's nuttier than a Starlight Log and hope the people like him better than the tattoo'd nutjob with the speedbuffs -- who didn't even bother making a visible appearance at the end of the world, might I add!

Yeah, their whereabouts and their true identity is one of the mysteries left unsolved...
There were some other things I wondered about the end event and that I wanted to ask here (cultists of the Lambs of Dalamud, where did you go?), even some minor matters like if Bahamut's final attack was Gigaflare or Teraflare, and there's always that ol' topic *cough* about Nophica *cough*, but it seems our voidsent friends are super busy with the localization of A Realm Reborn...!

That said, I still hope one day we'll get again Ferne's posts (Grand Wall of Text is always better for us adventurers with the thirst for Lore, thanks!) and the promised Lore Section.
