Starting off bad intentionally isn't really a good thing to do. It makes getting to the "good" parts that may or may not exist down the line a slog. A story should start out good. Also that comparison isn't great since Tidus is a stranger in a strange land and he's trying his best to get acclimated to this new world. Wuk is surprisingly uneducated about the land she wants to rule over.
I don't know how much I'm allowed to spoil here in the forum but there's a part where you interact with her father and he explains why she isn't truly educated on their people, ie knowing OF their cultures but not KNOWING. He explains the nature of the contest, if you've gotten that far.
