I don't know if they took inspiration from Artist from LoA, but I'm worried about BIG lawsuit coming from Nixon. Since Nixon owns LoA and has been very aggressive about lawsuit before. The only saving grace is that they are in Korea and Square is in Japan so it will be harder for them to sue. I think Square made a huge mistake because Pictomancer is too like Artist... If Nixon sues Square successfully they may need to delete Pictomancer from the game as a settlement, so hold off on leveling it for now... Wait and see.

you cant just sue every game with a similar weapon. the paintbrush is hardly original.

When you play games like FF14 or LoA, at the start the there is a small footnote at the bottom saying Copyright Symbol Square Enix or Copyright Symbol Nixon.... That means the entire game is copyright, including the class design like Artist...

My dude, as someone with years of experience dealing with copyright law, I need you to understand that copyright law does not work like this.

You cannot copyright an idea, nor the general expression of an idea. You can only copyright the very specific expression of an idea, and this does not rise to that benchmark. The footnote asserts copyright for those things which can be protected by copyright -- the actual dialogue, art, the distinguishable designs, the underlying code itself. What it does not cover, ever, under any circumstances, is the mechanics of the game. If that were the case, nobody would have been able to publish a new video game in your lifetime, because the second company to release a game where "dude shoots things with a bow" would have been sued into oblivion.

And even then it still wouldn't be a copyright case; it would be a patent case.

Go look up Ma Dai in Dynasty Warriors 7, then before that Relm FFVI , big Paintbrush isn’t exactly new as a weapon type even for LoA standards XD

Here’s the thing you can attempt the lawsuit it just would be immediately dismissed. This is not legal advice however I’m in law school and ran it by a teacher that’s a practicing attorney.

The mental gymnastics you would have to do to argue this in court would be entertaining though.

Relm sure looked nothing like the picture of Pictomancer for FFXIV. Art now can be copy righted.
