From my husband's perspective (who is a sprout struggling to go through Stormblood MSQ atm):
- PvP feels very janky
- Jobs are very boring at early levels
- At times MSQ feels very cringe
- GCD buttons feel strange and slow on some jobs

The game does a really terrible job of explaining weaving and you have so few oGCD’s at low levels, trying to explain that a new person the GCD is 2.5 seconds because at high levels you are often pressing 3 buttons per 2.5 seconds seems to go over a lot of peoples heads
That was what my friend often said in VC with me as well: "Sec, gotta get outta party got X solo duty to do." and wished it could at least be done together. The fact that you have to disband your party *constantly* when doing the MSQ is a constant example of this. I felt a bit disjointed from my friends because you can never stay in a party together.
I did have a (WoW) friend who started playing and he wanted to play DRK as that class appealed to him. He stopped playing at ARR content, mainly due to the fact it was all just a long long story - he never got to any of the raids he also wanted to try.
He didn't even dislike the story. He thought the stories are pretty well written in ARR & HW that he enjoyed reading them. But once that honeymoon phase was gone, at the end of the day what he craved for was that MMO experience. Maybe he'll give it a try again when DT launched but he admitted if he were so impulsive as to buy the full game back then, he would feel 'scammed' because the game feels like its made for people who's not fond of MMO interactions despite being marketed as one.
"Outside obvious jokes/sarcasm, I aim to convey my words to the future readers who may come across mine posts. Can I change -your- mind, somehow? Potentially... but that's not why I'm writing. You and I have wrote our piece(s). We don't necessarily need to change each other's mind. But we can change other's."
From my friends ''Combat is slow'' in comparison to Classic which is just...lmao.
Archer 1-15 is especially dull. The 5, 10 and 15 class quests are also terrible. Kill 8 or 10 mobs when you only have straight shot and the occasional heavy shot. At least PUG and LNC have 1-2 combo.
I know from some people, that they find, the game is too weeby/Yu-Gi-Oh-ish. And they find it boring because it is too easy and the gameplay is too binary.
Cheers
The 2.5s gCD is enough for a lot of people I spoke to/tried to introduce to the game to immeadiately put it back down.
Others don't even try because "the aesthetic is too Anime".
Of those who made it past that there's three and a half common complaints:
- Everything being locked behind 5 Expansions worth of MSQ you need to do sequentially
- The majority of that MSQ forcing you to play solo/drop party
- The short content cycle if they made it past the MSQ
- Related to that last point: the "Endgame" they were looking for doesn't exist
I had a HARD time getting into FFXIV when i first tried it:
(Quited and didn't come back until 2 years had passed)
[Reasons]
1) The story in ARR was soo dull to me..and the post ARR quests didn't help LOL
I only started to like/care about the story in Havenwards/SHB/EW..
(I found stormblood to be dull 60% of time too.)
2) Combat/Abilities
I was used to fast/reactive play, i found FFXIV combat to be very slow and stiff compered to World of Warcraft.
I also started out as DPS, and i was soo bored with the role and the job i played.
(Started to like game better when i tried out healer on my 2nd try, as i was heal main in WoW for 15+yrs.)
3)Appearance and graphics was off puting at first.
But once i got used to it..it got better.

Restructure the cadence of when jobs unlock core abilities - too many jobs have had their low-level gameplay brutalized when the job is made to revolve around abilities that don't unlock until HW/SB levels - and drop the ilvl syncs across the board, particularly at MSQ capstones, and you'd solve something like half the problem immediately.
People who bounce off the MSQ itself were likely always going to bounce off. It's the shambling corpse that is modern-day pre-50 gameplay that really does it in.
