Hmm... Boredom with normal hoomans while not wanting to move so far as to reach an entirely new species?

Part of it I'd say also stems from ancient human/animal hybrid creatures in various mythologies which over time evolved into what is usually collectively called demi-humans or monster girls as it's expanded far beyond just catgirls.
