So basically in this thread:
A bunch of people living in capitalist countries and getting income from various sources that derive their revenue through capitalist practices are outraged that a for-profit company has chosen to engage in capitalism to earn profits.
Some irony there, don't you think?
Capitalism isn't pro-consumer and never has been. It has always been pro-business. It takes governments passing laws and regulations to keep businesses in check so consumers can at least buy items determined to be necessities at reasonable prices. [note: virtual items in online games are not necessities] Anything not covered by those laws and regulations becomes fair game. Companies can charge what they want.
Competition between businesses can help to keep prices lower so consumers benefit but where those prices end up will depend on the consumers. As long as enough consumers are willing to pay a certain price, that is what a business is going to charge because that's the capitalist way. They have no need to lower the price, it goes against their interests. If they lower a price it's either because they're trying to entice consumers into spending more money, competition has forced them to do it to maintain market share, or the product is a failure that they're trying to unload to get what they can.
It doesn't matter what you personally think is or is not a fair price when others are going to pay that price happily. Either pay, hope someone is willing to buy the item for you, or go without. That's the reality of your situation.
If you don't like SE's business practices (or their products/services for that matter), then what on earth are you doing here giving them money instead of taking your business to companies with practices, products and/or services you believe in? If you want pro-consumer reform, you're not accomplishing anything by giving money to companies you consider anti-consumer.
As for how much of FFXIV's revenue (whether subscription, cash shop, merchandise sales, etc.) gets reinvested into the game, we have no way of knowing beyond what they choose to say to us. We know something gets invested back into the game because it couldn't exist otherwise. Think that amount should be more? Tough luck. We have no say in the matter. Their beancounters are going to make the decision.
Anyway, thanks for all the whine and cheese. It's been a decent repast for the day.
