We can't kill characters anymore they're too marketable.

And yet FF7 killed Aerith, ASOIAF killed Ned, Rob, and many others, TLOU killed off Joel. There can be good and bad deaths of course. Some deaths are just made for pure shock value. But that's vastly better than FF14's "oops tee hee Y'shtola didn't actually die". Can't offend the Y'shtola bodypillow havers after all.
