No what I meant is only getting 2 free retainers per world per account that would be shared access to all characters on the account made on that world and purchased retainers from mogstation also being a single account wide access retainer rather than every individual character getting their own retainers. So on standard sub with no mogstation additions you would have 2 retainers on said world regardless if you had 1 character on the world or 8 characters on that world. Granted they'd need to make certain gear items like AF gear not storable on retainer. This would have made retainers a shared storage option and eliminated the need to mail items between characters.
Changing them to be that way now is where the issues lie. While we have things like glamour dresser and armoire that could store the things not meant to be transferrable between characters, there are likely numerous people out there by now that have made alts just to get more retainers to either hoard things or flood more things onto the marketboards at the same time.
If I understand your idea correctly that would give us less storage overall.
I would prefer if the dev team gave us a FC chest-like box for personal use per world (server) so that all characters within said world could share items using a common storage, there's no need to change how retainers work.
I do agree that housing should be shared between characters under the same world, I think Yoshida said they would look into that several years ago but they never made any progress.
As someone that pays for 10 retainers, and I use them to the maximum on my main, I absolutely do not want any of my retainer storage shared across my accounts. Maybe someting similar to a FC Chest but available per each service account per world (so that alt's on the same world can share). But definitely not on the retainers. And I do think that non-tradable items should stay that way as well. Additionally, people that only have 2 base retainers may not want to pay just so they can have a private storage for their main character. No what I meant is only getting 2 free retainers per world per account that would be shared access to all characters on the account made on that world and purchased retainers from mogstation also being a single account wide access retainer rather than every individual character getting their own retainers. **Edit to Add - this would also cause loads of problems with gear that is bound - or other items- that are not supposed to be traded across any type of character.

It made sense to keep it separate before they limited houses to 1 personal per account because someone might want their own space for their alt. But when they made that change, they should have put in these QoL so all characters across the account could access the house in the same ways.
Bound gear honestly wouldn't be too much of an issue IMO. It would just be a matter of splitting bound gear into 2 categories. 1 would be character bound. This would be things like quest reward specific items and wouldnt be placeable in the retainer or shared storage. The other would be account bound which could include tomestone gear, duty drops, marketboardable gear that was equipped and used, etc which could be stored on retainer or shared storage and transferred to another character of yours on the same world. As someone that pays for 10 retainers, and I use them to the maximum on my main, I absolutely do not want any of my retainer storage shared across my accounts. My favorite part about this is there used to be a bug to add your alts to your friendslist so they could use your house. I have my alt on my friendslist still from the days it worked and it's so nice to be able to mail my alt and have them use my house.
But then I found about a year ago when I made a new character, they went out of their way to fix the bug, and did not give us a bug-free alternative.
Love you guys, SE.![]()
Bumping this because it is a very good suggestion.
All characters on the same world should have automatic access to your private house, and should have a menu similar to retainers where you can trade items and gil.
I'm not entirely sure what the RMT concern is here, because you can already work around this limitation by listing junk for millions on the MB and then buying it up with another character, or by having your alt in the same FC and using the FC chest to trade items. So why the pointless roadblocks?
One year later and we are still unable to share a private house with alts.
