The beta system was not tied to gearset.

Not directly, but half the function of it was linking the portrait to a gearset for display, and it would still disconnect every time you updated the gearset.

I wrote about it in a feedback post at the time, so it's not just me going from memory here.

It was still better than the current system, but it had its own version of the same "must stay aligned with current gear" attitude.

From memory I think it also ditched your set portrait and reverted to the default if you changed equipment after equipping a gearset-with-plate. I have a memory of losing set portraits because I'd changed the equipped earrings or something.

Was it? Yes, we had the ability to manually link a gearset to a portrait, but I could swear it was also possible to choose an Instant Portrait directly from the portrait menu. Just like glamour plates, you could use gearset to automatically apply them, but applying them through gearsets was not a requirement.

You could set an instant portrait but I think you either had to set it again on logging in or on changing job. Or maybe the gearset poses overwrite it. It certainly wouldn't have played nicely with the "job limit break" poses if you switched to something else.

Anyway, we haven't gone from good beta to bad release but from "okay but needed some tweaks" beta to bad release. But it was always overly fragile about you changing your equipment, just in different exact ways.

Zoom out, probably. It seems to have quite low tolerance for any parts of the character model getting close to the camera even if they're not colliding.

Unlink the glamour plate, or go somewhere glamour plates can be applied.

For some reason, portraits that are linked to a glamour plate can't be previewed or edited outside of sanctuaries.

Are you in a non-Sanctuary zone? That's also what happens if you're unable to edit due to not being in one.

I'm very irrationally bothered by error messages that pop up constantly. Ignoring it isn't an option for me.

While I can definitely understand why this is bothersome, and should not show up if you disable the feature, this is still very much a you thing. Despite mine own efforts of using chat filters, it is still flooded with unwanted information. I can't speak for everyone, but the chatlog for me is mainly a record of my time online and I hardly need it as the information is registered into it. Due to the information having sporadic relevancy, there are many boxes I have to leave unchecked. I wish it would record only the information I want to see and when, but that just isn't possible without constantly adjusting the filters. IOW, I just deal with it, which is my advice for you.

You're either zoomed out, or your character is completely off the camera. This is actually a bug I believe as you should not be able to do this, and when going through my portraits, I noticed some of these were like this by default. In these cases what I did was just use the option 'restore to default'.

Now that I think about it, there is an option in the bottom right corner of the portrait list, that lets you disable portraits. You'll have to toggle it for every single portrait though.
I don't know for sure that it'll remove the error, but that seems worth a try.
