I'd assume the reason for the stance they're taking is...

because Hydaelyn didn't want a "repeat" of the Zodiark business (That mind, she never actually allowed to even begin to pan out) with people becoming overly reliant upon gods.

Their purpose of essentially being the lynchpin that kept both the star and mankind from falling to ruin in the wake of the sundering is one I had long thought would be the case, but I'm mostly wondering if they still have some active role to play in either regard because existence is still in a fundamentally unnatural state of questionable stability.

I would point out that people had become very reliant on Hydaelyn throughout history. She had empowered many mortals with her crystals when she felt it was needed. Guess only she was smart enough to know when people should be helped and when they should be left alone.

I bet if they chose her as the Pilot for Zodiark she would have had no objections to it.

They arn't ASCIAN primals, they are not holes in the world consumed by hunger, but they are TRUE primals, like the ones we fed to the engine to power the ship.
Actual beings formed of the energy of worship.

So, to ask what they are for, is to ask what any primal is for... to fill the desires of those that summoned them.

I'm not sold on the "Twelve+1 hydaelyn collaborators" resolution, all they said was they serve the Star. Hydaelyn is often referenced as the Star itself but we learned that she really wasn't so that leaves the Star as it's own thing as well. We've been purposely misled before in other raid series stories and this doesn't feel too different.

I'll be fine to eat my words but I'm still apprehensive.

In Amaurot, they talk about the aim of the Zodiark project being to "grant a will to the star itself".

So I'm not sure where you'd get the idea that one existed.

Misremembering it seems. I remembered it as "A new will".

This made me think. Maybe they are responsible for keeping elements in balance in the long run.

Turned out I was partially right. They're responsible for keeping things in balance but not the elements in particular.

Maybe from the whole only the star or the will of it is the thing that decides what or what doesn't get a soul. So there seems to be something there pre Zodiark.
