Botting the game or using third party tools is a punishable offence. Period. People naturally know this, hence why there's a "don't ask, don't tell" sort of policy around these things. No matter how much Square insists they don't want to go on a tirade and mass-ban people or put anti-third party tool software in the game, they still take reports seriously when there's enough evidence of it.
That said, just because it's an offence against the ToS doesn't mean it's inherently bad. Which is great that SE is paying attention to these tools, since some are relatively useful. We shouldn't be having these tools to begin with. However the fact that these tools managed to do what we've been telling them for 10 years, and having taken them 10 years to actually listen, leave a bad taste. People have been asking to display damage types for a while, and reactions to those things have been how it breaks the game or how it kills the fun of figuring out what to use to mitigate the damage. Hell, what even is that third one, neutral damage? Is it pre-programmed damage that you can't mitigate, like 1k Needles?
Atelier's right; even if the tool is useful and doesn't break the game, people shouldn't be so surprised that the mere use of them is a dangerous thing to do. It's banned, no matter how minor, innocuous or benevolent it is. That's not an opinion, that's just fact. Square doesn't care, they explicitly say "Don't do this", they're already conceding to a very slim gray margin in not tracking your game settings. If you get caught, there just is no gray area, you're done.
But past that, Nightshade's right also. Ok, sure, heavy workload on the devs, but there are so many additions to the game that are just "not great" versus the stuff that we've been asking for years and they kept saying "No". And then when 3rd party tools start being widespread because they provide what fans ACTUALLY ASKED FOR, they get surprised about it and start working on those things? Why not do it before, we've only been asking for longer than FF16 has been around...
I remember when we started having additions to GPose like freezing weather and time, saving camera settings, stuff like that, the moment tools like uh... not Anamnesis, the one that came before Anamnesis, forgot the name... like, that started getting widespread use, and suddenly they add features to GPose.
Like, I get it that they have their own vision. And I get that not everything the fans ask for is good. But some stuff are overall seen as positive additions, and they skirt around them. More inventory space? Can't do that. Different housing purchase system? Can't have that. Show us the freaking damage types so we can reliably use the mitigation you give us rather than leave us wonder why a LASER is doing physical damage? And then look what happened, we got that.
People shouldn't be messing with their game with third party tools to get what we've asked for years. That's how you end up with modders fixing some models and gear, which draws people over to modding even harder than they already are. They shouldn't, not just because it's a bannable thing. They shouldn't because they also shouldn't insist on things that ARE doable with Square just ignoring it and handwaving it all the time. And then implementing stuff far fewer people even asked for.
Anyway, rant aside... that's just me, I know I don't know jack.
