Either way. Such is life, with its highs and lows. Such is good storytelling. As far as the menial tasks go, I think people forget the kind of world this is. Just because we saved this place or that, there are still plenty of people that don't actually know who we are (clearly someone that doesn't let a little heroism get to their head). There's no viral video being circulated of our escapades.

Ah, the Barrens back in Vanilla, home to headless raptors, footless zebras, hideless boars, toothless wolves, and Mankrik's wife. All of them five to ten minutes apart on foot. Because it was a level 10-18 zone and you didn't get a mount until 40.

I dunno why people are complaining, is not like they can't move those silly MSQ quests to a side quest. If you like doing those quests, you still have a option to do, if you don't, then you finally have a option to not do

Things like that are good for world-building and they help keep our character grounded. They help us feel our place in the world.

Square tried a story more like what the OP wants with XIII. You were basically running from one hallway to another. You didn't really interact with the people in each hallway except for one or two story points. So you didn't find out much about them and you weren't really able to have a connection to them. Part of that was by XIII's design that you're essentially criminals, but we're not criminals. We're the Warrior of Light. Part of our personality is interacting with the world.

If the story was just all the exciting moments without any slow and quiet parts then the story would feel rushed and not real.

Nothing feels more pace breaking than the sky being on fire - all of creation coming to an end - and we have to play dress-up with some rabbits, or help someone's marital issues.

The filler quests don't belong once the ramp up has already begun.

Random nobody: "Oh, so as a god killing hero, you're too busy to help us small folk with our chores?"

The WoL: "Uuhhh, yeah?"

I don't mean that as a negative; i just mean that the story is going to be whatever it is; and we just have to try to find enjoyment where we can find it, because not everyone is going to be pleased by something and it's impossible for the team to try and cater to every single whim we have.
