An entire thread just to say the thing you wanted to say initially. Here in lies an issue that forced participation in pvp would fix. That being the average 14er's distain for it due to being to deal with a challenge. Nothing in this game forces you to get good outside of savage and ultimate. 95% of content can be carried and leeched, and is more of that were pvp in nature then they would more readily forced to get good to get anywhere.
And you're wrong. Because FFXI was incredibly hard and people dealt with it by quitting en masse. 90% of my friendlist was a ghost town by the time WOW came out.
PvP is not fun. If I found it fun I would do more than Frontline, and that is too much pvp just doing that a few times a month. If my son did not drag me into them I would probably never do them. I'm horrible at it and I'll never get better because I just don't care enough to learn it.
You could never force me to pvp, I would just never play the game again. Here in lies an issue that forced participation in pvp would fix. I tell you another one it would fix too, the login queues. Here in lies an issue that forced participation in pvp would fix. The issue you're seeing is an issue that doesn't really exist in the confines of this game. Because you're clearly advocating to change the game into something that goes against every core principle that was established over the past 10 years by the developer. I am all for shaking things up but this would be akin to revamping the core gameplay loop and still keeping the name. Here in lies an issue that forced participation in pvp would fix. I think the issue here is that you are not happy with what the game is. Or the game you played prior to FF had those things but for some reason you can't go back to playing that.
FF14 is not a pvp game and it isn't a game that requires a high base skill to complete it. And that is by design. It's not an issue with the game. It's what the team wanted it to be and that is what carried them to success over all these years. And I say this as someone who loves harder difficulties.
As a healer main the game has a tendency to become really stale as soon as people have figured out fight mechanics or overgear content due to how combat works in ff14.
BUT I am not part of the majority. Players who look for a constant challenge are the minority.
It might not look like this because players who look for challenging content are usually the part of the type of players who stay informed. And I don't mean that as people who play the game casually are oblivious to what is happening but more in a way that the average FF14 player subscribes to the game without ever setting a foot in the forum. Reads up on rotations. Speculates about class balance or engages in conversations about the game on reddit or in here. And as you can see in this forum there are a sizeable numbers of users who enjoy the more casual nature of the mandatory content of the game.
FF14 is not about alienating people who struggle with harder difficulties. And for people who want more challenging content, that is being provided as an option.
It might suck for you and others like you because you thrive on constant challenges and the need to feel superior through competition. But this is not what this game is about or suddenly will be about.

No thank you. If you want a mmo thats only focus on pvp FFXIV is not for you. FFXIV focus is mainly on pve content not pvp. There is already enough open world pvp online games and not enough that focus on only pve content.
Awful, horrible, lousy idea.As the title suggests, SE making 7.0 a pvp driven expansion would really shake up the formula and create many interesting opportunities. First the more practical being that content would have a longer shelf life given it would be more player driven. Also it would make the open world far more interesting by during the boring, one and done zones into moving, contested fronts. They could even do monthly/seasonal rewards and titles for those that control the most land. You could also involve the crafters and gatherers by making economy player controlled. Making market board systems only work for friendly factions.
Lore wise you could justify it as a either a breakdown of the great company of Eorzea and other nations, or a scramble for the resources of the new world or southern continent. It would also open up role-playing opportunities by allowing players to settle scores with violence. I would even go so far as allowing war crimes and making a infamy/fame or hero/villain system to gauge rewards and standing. I mean, who hasn't wanted to commit warcrimes against the Lalafell menace.
Thoughts?
PvP isn't much fun, and I am happy whenever I can ignore it. A pvp-centered expansion sounds like an excellent reason to play some other game.
PvP has never been an important part of FFXIV, and most FFXIV players aren't much interested in PvP, so the game would likely lose a lot of players if PvP became anything other than completely optional.
If you really want a PvX MMO then there are plenty to choose from already
They should add a GvG system like the one Ragnarok Online has (War of Emperium). As the title suggests, SE making 7.0 a pvp driven expansion would really shake up the formula and create many interesting opportunities. Y'all acting like PvP committed some horrible wrong to you ate your food and kicked your dog. Riddle me this, why are the games that have the most longevity overwhelmingly pvp?
I would love PvP to be better in this game and frankly, I wouldn't even mind PvP gear being a method of catching up item levels, which it did serve as in the past (ARR & Heavensward PvP sets had stats and capped out at 110 and 205 item levels respectively). But World PvP is one of my hard stops on an MMO because it's just unfun.
