There are no denial of semi-conductor shortage and COVID hit hard on global economy.

However, it is no excuse that SE could have prepare better. EU server have been near capacity since early 2019. EW launch are practically worse for NA and worst in EU. The difference in JP DC vs EU and NA to some extend have only SE to blame. At this point nothing will change the issue for NA and specifically EU. SE should really learn from this mistake and take better action in the future.

Well, I've played many MMO's in my life and I have to say by far this is the WORST LAUNCH I have ever-no Bless online doesnt count, that's different. New world doesnt count either. That one Tera patch that completely obliterated their economy in a way that years later they still havent recovered from-that wasnt like, that wasn't a huge patch day, it was a smaller patch day so. We don't talk about Blade and Soul eithe-LOOK. All I'm saying is. This could have been done way better in my opinion, the opinion that I just wrote, right here, in my Mr.Grinch pajamas in my squeaking wobbly rolling computer chair with a million puncture holes in it via my cat that snores louder than I do. Clearly I am one whos opinion should be held in great regard, just like everyone else here.

Yet this problem could have been (partialy) mitigated. Early access could easily have been made part of the more expensive package (with an additional $10 cost hidden into it). This money could then have been used to get some stuff arranged, or be used as indirect compensation.

But without any extra purchase costs, EA idealy should have been granted based on randomness, and not be promoted as a guarantee with the purchase. But to promote earlier purchases, you could do a daily lottery, so early purchases simply get more chance of obtaining the early access token. This way you can limit the number of people that want to get in to play the new expansion. The only downside is spoilers, although an NDA can cover some of this (posting spoilers outside of the dedicated forums then can cause a permanent ban on your account). This at the same time also makes people more willing to wait for the actual release (and this is NOT a problem either!).

The main reason to not want this, is because now the game gets negative news about it, but negative news is still news, and news brings attention, which is still part of marketing. In fact, in the early blizzard days it was used as a 'look at how popular and good our game is' type of marketing. So it very likely is a deliberate choise to take such risk. Most players will accept the 2 weeks of hassle as they dont see any rush to complete the story as long as spoilers arent being posted anyway.

Its also very likely that the subscription costs have a decent profit margin in them already. 20% is no strange value. This effectively means that 10 months can provide 2 free months, and still not be an issue. Updates are covered within the expansions (and in a healthy business, they should sustain itself. And this can be maintained if the expansions are good, because that warrants a higher price). Now obviously, expansions are also made to force people to subscribe longer by making them less quickly bored. But again, the majorty should be playing longer than what is needed to cover costs.

Combining those aspects, and the free month might just become part of the marketing budget. Who knows if they already reserved the money for it anyway? And otherwise, new players can reduce the cost of a free month.

They already have a massive number of f2p players, that alone tells me that server costs arent that high anyway.

The 2002 error hasn't popped up for me once since they patched the login server on Tuesday so if your still getting it there's a good chance its not on their end but something inbetween.

As for the queues just remember that these login queues will only persist for a while, eventually things will calm down after a few weeks they always do. The semiconductor shortage is real even if people don't want to accept that truth but if they can get their hands on more hardware they'll definitely do so to alleviate the current constraints, unfortunately people have to be patient.

Nah 2002 errors are still getting confirmed by a lot of people on reddit, a bunch of discords etc, there was even like 5 or 6 servers with technical difficulties after the maintenance. Some people are also randomly getting 90ked.

seriously though, i cringe so hard whenever i read something like "oh come on square, a week of gametime is like what? 3 bucks?" as if they are only giving free time to a single account. there have been lawsuits for some really shitty things that got settled by companies bigger than square that didn't cost the kind of money these free week cost square.
