Renaming Final Fantasy XIV to Final Fantasy Online

Calling it 14 honestly is what kept me away from FF14 for so many years. Giving it a numbers make me assume that they will give up on this MMO someday. My guess is Eastern developers will never understand why Western players feel this way.

Final Fantasy Online makes a massive amount of sense to me because it makes me assume that we might get graphical engine updates someday or actual UI updates someday.

Calling it 14 leads me to assumption this MMO is basically stuck in time and never really changing that much from the original formula which is very successful to be fair.

I mean it's not their fault that some people have western MMORPG ptsd. Or that some people can't use their brain for a quick research.

FFXI came out in 2002 and still gets updates and many people play it lol. If you take 2 seconds to google some facts you would see that SE never really abandoned their MMOs, even XIV they rescued instead of just letting it rot but yeah i guess some abandonment fear issues can't be helped.

If it is name that way. It would be Final Fantasy Online 2. You want people looking for FF online and finding 11? And then what rename 12, 13, and 15? This ship sailed almost two decades ago, you are a little late.

They could apply the New brand of "Final Fantasy Online" in the next MMORPG after XIV, the thing is diferenciate the two models of this franchise

But it is differentiated. It's "Final Fantasy XI online" and "finally fantasy XIV online"

They are still mainline final fantasy games, not spinoffs.

Please stop this stupidity. Final Fantasy has never been and never will be just one thing. This is a beaten battered and dead horse at this point. And it's pretty much useless to even entertain this idea. FFXI and FFXIV deserve their titles. They have always deserved their titles. And always will have their titles. End of story. FFXI was the brain child of Hironobu Sakaguchi and was his final contribution to the Final Fantasy series before he even left the company. The company was even still called Square Soft when FFXI was in developement....... Final Fantasy purists are kinda pathetic imho and kinda cringe :x

Personal opinion: Final Fantasy XI should have been Final Fantasy Online, Final Fantasy XIV should have been Final Fantasy Online II. Final Fantasy Tactics is un numbered, and it one of the more heavily respected iterations of the franchise, so the idea that it'd "just be a spin off" is bothersome.

However, since they have done it the way they have, the FF XI should stay FF XI and FF XIV should stay FF XIV. Can you imagine if they changed the names now? Either XI and XIV cease to exist, or suddenly XI has weird seagull laughing and Blitzball, and FF XIII would be about bros pushing their car or something. They've done what they've done so they can do naught but stay the course.

If FFXI and XIV were just called FF Online and FF Online II, the giant undertaking that was ARR's relaunch would never happen. They would just dismiss it as a failed spin-off and move on.

I say, at the moment, XIV is bringing more eyes to the franchise than any other game. A MMO. Not a singel player game. People would laugh at you if you even suggested the notion of it, say, 10 years ago.

Western players have no basis to feel this way though. In your mind, the number may mean something like what you've described, but MMOs have no history to encourage that feeling. Rather, history tends to the opposite, as there are a number of Western MMOs without a number that have been retired.

There is EverQuest and EverQuest 2, both running concurrently. There is Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, with both of them also running. There is FFXI and FFXIV, FFXI being launched nearly 20 years ago but still getting attention from dedicated players.
