Villain needs to capture/obtain X of X McGuffins to make something bad happen is a plot device that has been used in many places, including RPG's, before Endgame and since - the current season of Supergirl is even using that trope. Big content creators tend to exaggerate and go a bit over the top, because that's what gets clicks - and, unfortunately, those exaggerated takes end up getting parroted by many others.
Edit P.S.: One source of confusion among WoW players might be that, as a general community, they seem much less likely to pay attention to quest/plot text than FFXIV players. So, something may have been explained thoroughly through quests but, if it wasn't in a big cutscene itself, it would seem to such players to happen out of nowhere. (Me, I always read the quests, on here and on FFXIV - at least the first time doing them)
