The differences between WoW and FF aren't as great as people would like you to believe. WoW has some of the most heartbreaking and lore-rich storylines, although not like they used to. But it's not as *anything* as any other game these days, except maybe in endgame raiding (for those into it).

What WoW has is smoothness. FF has combo chains, in lieu of button mashing, but that makes combat feel less intuitive, and more disjointed, and especially slower. In WoW, if you attempt to initiate combat while mounted, it automatically dismounts you. You can bring up the map by clicking on the map display in the corner. You can easily send stuff between alts. And, the classic, not nearly as many zones to load when you move between areas, which was one of the original selling points.

FF is a great game, and I'm happy to play it, but I still haven't quit WoW, and I don't know if I ever will.

ETA: I'm also curious about what FF will be like after 8 expansions.

I dabbled in WoW for a brief period and was actually shocked how little it allowed me to care about what was happening, and the occasional wiki dive is nice but not very engaging when it comes to wanting to learn the lore of that universe. I'd be interested to see what it is WoW vets like about that story but is there a way to get that without hunting down years' worth of books?

The issue with SL is I'm paying them the sub but I feel like working than having fun. Everything now on WoW is slower and longer. Additional layers of grind added. It is currently the worst xpac.

I've always gone to Nobbel when I get in the mood for WoW lore updates but there's always room for more good content creators. I'd say pick the WoW stories that mean the most to you since you'll do the best job retelling the ones you're most passionate about.

Continue to spread the word that it's okay for players to enjoy both games. I've tried a couple of times since I quit at the end of Legion but I just can't get back into WoW myself. That doesn't mean others can't, or that longtime FF players shouldn't give WoW a try.

If I wanted to learn the "lore" of WoW I would just watch End Game since they basically ripped off Thanos and added there own versions of the infinity stones from what I keep hearing. If a player like Pyromancer that has played for however many years he did and had every single lore book still couldn't figure out the lore how can people say lore wise WoW is as good or better then FFXIV? All I hear from WoW vets is how bad the story is and how they just ripped off End Game.

This is of course coming from others and not my own experience as I have never played WoW but the way WoW players/vets talk about WoW doesn't shine that game in a very good light.

I don't think WoW's lore is difficult to figure out, not for the current/relevant story. There is depth in its history, if you want to look into it - but I haven't really felt it is required. As a WoW vet (and a dedicated Marvel/MCU fan), I think an Endgame comparison is rather forced. Villain needs to capture/obtain X of X McGuffins to make something bad happen is a plot device that has been used in many places, including RPG's, before Endgame and since - the current season of Supergirl is even using that trope. Big content creators tend to exaggerate and go a bit over the top, because that's what gets clicks - and, unfortunately, those exaggerated takes end up getting parroted by many others.

Edit P.S.: One source of confusion among WoW players might be that, as a general community, they seem much less likely to pay attention to quest/plot text than FFXIV players. So, something may have been explained thoroughly through quests but, if it wasn't in a big cutscene itself, it would seem to such players to happen out of nowhere. (Me, I always read the quests, on here and on FFXIV - at least the first time doing them)

Part of the reasons the Sigils stuck out as such poor writing is the abruptness in which they are introduced. While the image has appeared beforehand, at no point has anyone made any comments about the sigils having any actual power, certainly not to the extent that they're of any real import. Then, in the same patch, the sigils are suddenly the most important thing in the world and must be protected at all costs, clearly as everyone has known all along, and that the Jailer's grand schemes are centered on them. Obviously. Didn't we mention it before? No? Well they are, shut up they're important. And yeah I read the quest text too, maybe one of the covenants I wasn't in explained it, which would be comically bad storytelling in its own right.

Now quick, hide your sigil in the one place he'll never look... but where? Another realm of death? Far away with a trusted retainer? In a locked drawer? Buried in the garden out back? Under a carpet? In a... paper bag maybe? Madness! No, floating as the centerpiece of the large decorative sculpture in the dead center of your house's entry hall while you leave nobody behind to defend it. Obviously.

This is partly because 9.1 was supposed to be two patches that got smashed into one, so the story became this bizarre, jumbled mess. Maybe if they had more time. Maybe if they prioritized making the game and not... well, doing all the horrible things they're getting sued for.

And that's not getting into the unfathomably bad character consistency. Sure, people can change over time, but to rebel against your literal god-of-death overlord, who specifically uses Domination magic, whose entire aesthetic is chains and suffering, and who is directly and explicitly responsible for killing you and most of your homeland and enslaving you into an eternal unrest of misery... someone you've done the bidding of for years at his every beck and whim... NOW you choose to rebel when he mentions other people will serve him with, "I will never serve!"

    im new to this game

i do like the game its beautiful

I feel restricted by the MSQ though, in wow i could just go wherever, follow the ! and turn in the ? and just do whatever.

    This is very linear

but then idk how to make an MMO or its story, so i cant really judge. its probably a development nightmare, how do you make a game story interesting that able to last 10 years +

I had 15 years to learn it all, between expansions reading like 17 books and so
With FF 14, all I had to do was play the game.

There was some great lore about Wrathion...but Blizzard deleted it.

There were some wonderful quests about Emperor Shaohao..but Blizzard deleted them. One specific quest was called 'The Old Seer". Zap. Deleted. Content gone "because reasons".

There was a wonderful questline for a legendary cloak..but Blizzard obliterated it.

I do not ever see why a player should need to buy anywhere near 17 books to get the lore of a game that should actually BE in the game.
