Why do some people seem personally offended by people who have more than 1 character?

Yep, being a condescending jerk. This is why I, as a woman, hate the term mansplaining. Anyone is capable of talking down to another person and being condescending and this term allows us women to get a pass far too often when doing the same damned thing.

It's really a very silly word, for the reasons you mention.

While 100% agreed that it's a dumb term, I do see the nuance of its use, especially here in Japan. The whole concept that women couldn't possibly know or understand X because of their gender is truly mind boggling.

We have something similar in my circle of friends we call "Baka-gaijin" (stupid foreigner), which basically is where Japanese try to explain something we couldn't possibly understand about Japanese culture, or heap on praise about "wow, amazing you can use chopsticks!!" when my response is (internally) "Dude, I've almost lived here longer than my home country, wtf. I speak the language."

I have characters on different data centers to play with different friends. With data center travel coming though I'm going to take one of my NA alts and transfer her to Oceania

Offended? Not that I have seen. Very puzzled? Yea I have seen that reaction a lot.

I have a lot of alts. They're a way for me to play as a different race without using a fantasia on my main. It also refreshes my memory on the story.

Are alts a waste of time? Well only to those who wouldn't enjoy them. I like that this game doesn't ever force you to play alts to support your main, but you are still allowed to have alts if you want to. I just wish we could mail our own alts. It's tiresome to have to get another person to help you to transfer items and gil.

It's a weird phenomenon to be sure, and it's not just limited to this. You'll see it crop up the instant you inquire about doing or using anything in a way that deviates even slightly from the instructions on the box. A real-life example I can give you, throwing together a barebones table for use in a workshop, with one leg longer than the others because it was going to be permanently located at a spot where there was a difference in height between two sections of the space. "Why is one leg longer?" *explains* "But why is it longer than the others!?" *repeats explanation with additional info about how the table needs to be there for ease of reach of an outlet and pegboard* "NO THAT'S NOT RIGHT MOVE IT OVER A FOOT THE LEG SHOULD NOT BE LONGER." I wish I was engaging in hyperbole, typing that out. I've also seen this a decent amount from people who become angry at you for willingly doing work, even when it has nothing to do with them, if it's something they think could be done in a fashion they're more familiar with. I mean, I get passing advice, cool whatever. The sudden roiling and dogged irritation at sweat on somebody else's brow these types launch into is just bewildering.

Because people on the forums want to be able to stalk/harass you in game, and that's harder to do if you post on an alt.

There are several reason's I play alts. One is because I like to experience the game in so many ways RP, and I want to lock away my names as well. If I use a name change token I could lose my name that I have played with going all the way back to the UO days. I would HATE to lose my name, and EricGorn would NEVER hold a bow. EVER.

1. I can put up 6x more items on the Auction House. Not to mention that I have 6x more retainers that can hold 6 times more items. Horder Omini Crafter's wife uses her acts as storage.

2. I can be a part of 6x more guilds.

3. I save a lot more money on fantasias.

4. Because my Tank is a male is Melee. Only. If I want a ranged or magical char I have names and looks for them. My Tank will never be a female and never hold a bow. Period.

5. Because I can. If FFIXV was supposed to play with only one chr then they would not have given me the option to make more.

6. Sometimes I do not feel like being "Social" so I'll log on to my gathering chr and do some gathering without having to say hello to people or needing to say anything at all. Total Stress-free gaming.

Just some at the top of my head.

Whenever someone asks about alts...

They're the ones who always scream "why would you want more than one character???", "You don't need alts" (or if on Reddit downvote the post into oblivion), etc...

It seems like the idea actually offends them.

Who knows? Maybe they feel that alts give me a game play advantage they lack by sticking to a single character. It's true in some ways. It means I have more retainers for storage, ventures and marketboard listings. It's also a disadvantage - it means more time/gil put into leveling, gearing, farming for mounts and minions since those aren't shared account wide, etc.

Doesn't change that I'm going to keep making alts since I enjoy playing on alts. Character development and progression are far more interesting to me than end game and it fills the additional time I have available to play that most don't.

Without alts I'd probably be unsubbing fairly often during the year since I'd run out of things I want to do. A simple one month subbed, 6 weeks unsubbed rotation would let me keep my house so the risk of demolition wouldn't keep me subbed.
