And thats fine. I dont think always living in the past is a good thing either -- you will never achieve those same moments or happiness in the same game. People found this out with Classic really quickly.

She even admits to playing Shadowlands which she had to do offstream BTW because she took a TONNNNNN of crap from her community for even saying she was thinking about it.

Agreed. The biggest one being that WoW has designed a system in which they control how you play rather than allowing the Player to decide how they want to play the game.
This rings so well, especially post MoP. I could never figure out what exactly made me stop playing and then Zepla says this and it just all made sense.

A game should never ever force you to play it how, when, where, for how long. I wish I could take back those empty hours of playing WoW for so little progress or reward in return.

If they didn't find it out in WoW classic, they were quickly put back into the twilight zone with that peer pressuring level boost in Burning Crusade Classic.
What is the point of classic when you try to insert those sleazy cash shop tactics in a game meant to enjoy or relive nostalgia ? Christ.

We have a saying in the Guild Wars 2 community: "Fun on someone else's schedule isn't fun." What I like about GW2 and FFXIV is I can long in and be like "Hmm, what do I feel like doing today..." Back when I played WoW, it was more like I was handed a list of daily demands, which I would do and then log off.

In FFXIV, you have these Beast Tribes where you can do daily quests to grind reputation, but they're entirely optional side activities. In WoW, those daily rep grinds were literally the gateway to content progression. It was right down to "You play this class, so you have to go to these specific NPCs and make them happy enough to sell you a trinket or weapon to get your item level high enough so you can play with your friends again."

In FF14 you have to grind item level. If you refuse it you will be locked out from content, even from the MSQ. Item level grind and reputation grind are basically the same. FF14 is not better in this case.

However getting your item level up is quite easy in this game and takes almost no time to have the level required to enter the content.

Watched the stream it was interesting and all three seemed to be very nice. Certainly seems to be willing to go to FFXIV with an open mind. Hope he likes the game although judging from what i read if he's raid centric like WoW appears to be he might not find the end game very rewarding if and when he gets to it.

It's not a grind for item level at all lol. There are so many ways to advance item level that if you just play the game, you'll get it up, unless you intentionally avoid content that progresses your character and gear lol.

WoW has both. Some main story quests are gated behind reputation in the past while they were current, not quite sure about Shadowlands as I didn't finish it. Heroic dungeons and Raid Finder also have item level requirements.

looking back, WoW became a job more than a game.

towards the end it felt like if I missed a day I should call in sick or something to let Blizz know I wouldnt be there. well, maybe not -that- bad, but it had long stopped being fun, in any way. I play games for entertainment, fun, escape from reality, any one of a number of reasons, but getting a second non paying job is not one of them.

I dont regret my time there. but its been a long time since they earned my money and my time.

Annie with the Ship of Theseus philosophy question described it perfectly. If you replace literally every core system that people fell in love with is it really the same MMO? What I honestly find hilarious about all of this?

Everything being pointed out as a strength in FF14 right now I remember a lot of people calling weaknesses for years. Just the idea of not having alts as a normal things on multiple characters was a big issue for WoW players for years BUT that was before they added so many convoluted systems that made having an alt a total pain.
