Seeing hate toward "refugees from other MMOs?"

Hi, sorry if this is improper, this is my first post on the forum.

I very recently grew out of my sprout, and am very much enjoying FFXIV. I've been playing pretty much nonstop for the past few months, and look forward to finding new and creative ways to make my Rogaedyn look not-garbage in any glamour I try to put him in.

I switched over from WoW after Blizzard decided to break my class for the umpteenth time, and it has me very concerned that in every other alliance or full-party duty I play, there's someone complaining about all the "WoW refugees." Either that they don't know mechanics, or that they're dreading the influx of new people during the lead up to Endwalker, or that they think that all WoW players can't stand to live without DBM shouting at them every 3 seconds. (I'll admit, I felt a little sketch when I learned this game doesn't allow addons, but things have gone very smoothly since I grew out of that.)

Is this a genuine sentiment among the community? I worry of being ostracized or worse if I even bring up the fact that I used to play WoW while in a duty with people.

Hello! Longtime FFXIV and WoW player here!

Most people who complain about "WoW Refugees" are old WoW players who just, for whatever reason, can't let go. You'll find a lot of people on this game who play any combination of other mmos, and most people don't care. The few who want to blame every toxic player on being from WoW are holding onto the old community stereotype that we're too good to be mean to one another.

Some of my FC mates are doing 3s right now, so it's definitely not as widespread as the vocal minority would have you believe.

It's a sentiment shared by the tribalistic dregs of the community but not by the majority. Nearly every attempt at dragging WoW players (usually by trolls) I've seen has been shot down by other players. Don't worry about your gaming history, no one worth listening to will give you trouble for coming from another game.

WoW is the biggest game in this genre and has been for almost two decades. Obviously some people intrigued by FFXIV will have come from WoW. I certainly did.

The hate against WoW and its players goes all the way back to FFXI days (almost 20 years now..). I feel like the sentiment is faaaaar less extreme in-game, but online forums can be a different situation. It's currently an even more popular topic due to some big WoW streamer coming over to XIV for a bit.

Some in the XIV community can be a bit rabid and think there can only be XIV in one's life and the game can do no wrong, but that seems to be a minority. Most people you'll run across are perfectly decent and don't care where you come from. Have fun with the game

I dare DARE DARE anyone to do this in game with me in a group because they are getting reported. FF14 Community welcomes all new players no matter the MMO they come from and we do not tolerate toxicity towards our sprouts.

Maybe you had the bad luck of meeting someone who doesn't like WoWfugees. Personally, whenever I meet a WoWfugee I immediately craft them a fancy glam and give them a bunch of Gil.

• There have been WoW refugees since the game relaunched in 2013. You could say it started with WoW and FFXI refugees.
• A majority of people with the crown icon (veteran players) used to play WoW years ago, or still do occasionally.
• WoW refugees have been falling into this game for a really long time. Many people you meet played it at some point.
• Don't misunderstand! The game attracts people brand new to MMOs, friends of people who play, people who like the FF series generally, people from other MMOs, it even seemed to get a lot of people from Overwatch. There is just a massive crossover of people who have played both FFXIV and WoW.

In an alliance raid, it's not worth taking what people say seriously unless it's targeted at you specifically. If they specifically mention your name, you should report them for being rude to you.

If they are just saying meaningless things and not attacking a specific person, it's not worth taking it seriously. They aren't really that mad. Wiping and dying in alliance raids is normal. It's normal for half the alliance to wipe and get resurrected 5 times and that's even fully expected in the design. If the entire alliance wipes sometimes, that's just how it is.

If someone is salty about a wipe like that, they usually aren't taken seriously and probably aren't as mad as they come across. If you still find it offensive or they target you specifically, offending people is against the rules and they do act on it if you report it.

This games player base is a lot more smug than wow's if you haven't noticed already
