Final Fantasy VI. My very first final fantasy game, had me hooked from the very opening scene with Terra, Wedge and Biggs riding their magitek armor across the wasteland. Had me *addicted* by the opera scenario. <3 <3 <3

My first ever FF was Final Fantasy Tactic Advance, I absolutely loved it and it's still my favorite of the franchise along with FFXII (the ps2 original version, I'm not a huge fan of the new job system for Zodiac age).
Mainly because of how vast the lore is with all the races, the jobs and everything.
The game itself is beautiful, colorful and really enjoyable!

The original FFVII. Good memories playing that game. The early game was awesome, but once you were able to leave Midgar… HOLY CRAP!!! Traveling the world was great. Man, that story was pretty damn good, too.

FFVIII. Instantly fell in love with its portrayal of Edea and later Ultimecia, and also the dynamic between Squall and Seifer. He is one of the few FF main characters I find relatable and actually enjoyed. I often wish I could swap them out for one of the more interesting companions or antagonists. That was followed by VII and then VI, both of which still rank high for me.
My all time faves though? IX and XII. XII had a very well fleshed out world with nuanced politics and I liked how they handled the Occuria and Venat, plus with Sakimoto as a composer its music was a refreshing change at the time. As much as I like Uematsu's work, XII had very distinctive themes setting it apart from the other FFs. IX just had an insanely cool plot and, at the time, I was pleased it let me form a 4 char party. I also liked the fact that it had a defined job system and abilities over the more freestyle nature of VII and VIII, which I had played just before it. Visually it was also very charming.
Following that, I'd 7R is shaping up to be a new fave but I'd like to see the full story first; X and XV were also good additions, in spite of the development hell XV went through.

When the game's story becomes self-aware:

My first FF game was FFX, when I was a kid. I played it and liked it, but I remember thinking it was super hard. I managed to make it trough half of the game, then my CD corrupted mysteriously. I was bummed that I couldn't play anymore, but I played other games as well so I didn't care too much. Then when I was older and got a PS3, I bought FFXIII. I was super excited to finally play an FF game again. I loved the game, even though I had no idea what a fal'cie and a l'cie was. However about 1/3 of the game in, my CD corrupted!! I was extremely upset... I thought FF games were cursed for me and would always corrupt, so I kinda abandoned the franchise, until I started playing FFXIV in 2018. Now FFXIV is my favorite game of them all, and I really want to go back and play the other games! Now I have a gaming pc and don't need CDs anymore, so I bougt all FF games after X on steam. I haven't played them yet but I still want to... I'm just too focused on FFXIV to play other games!
This whole CD corruption thing is why I say digital purchases last more than physical ones, even though you're just renting access to them technically. Now all my games are digital.
Final Fantasy VII, it came with our Playstation and I loved it. For a long time it was my favourite and of course it got me into playing all of the others. Though out of the classic FF titles, once I got past my er...edgy teenage years IX slipped into being my favourite but VI and VII sitting there as part of the top 3.
But er, I've played:
I, II, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XI, XII, XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, XIV, XV, Legends, Legends II, Legends III, Adventure, Crystal Chronicles, Type-O, Tactics, Tactics Advanced and probably more, so one can assume I'm obsessed with the series.
And as OP mentioned XIII-2, I'm going to sort of side with OP. I didn't like XIII and I tried to like it, like really tried, but it feels like XIII-2 they tried to fix a few of those complaints I had with it. It was still flawed IMO but I enjoyed it a lot more than I did XIII. I still wasn't quite a fan of the battle system, but I feel it doesn't really show its value until you have a full set of skills you can use strategically, which of course in XIII takes forever to get because it was still giving you tutorials hours into the game.

first played or first watched?..
,

First watched was tatics on cousin lap. I have gone back played/beat all expect 4

FF X-2
it was one of my birthday gifts when i was a kiddo xD
Afterwards i played the older ones via friends and got into newer ones soon after,
unfortunately i didnt play FFXIV until after my military service cause i was against Sub based MMOs based on the awful experience i had with WoW and Activisions questionable decisions..
Im so glad i was proven wrong ehe, this game rocks.
Final Fantasy 4. Rydia was my favorite character becasue she was a Summoner and I got into Summoner jobs because her. ^^

FF4 back when it was FF2 on the SNES. I've been a Dark Knight and Dragoon fan ever since.
