Bloodborne pulls from the same gothic dark fantasy roots as Reapers do but Reapers are basically melee necromancers and necromancers have been around in gaming for ages. They're just usually caster classes so I do think it's kind of interesting for SE to make them melee combatants.

Slight correction here... the reaper is distinct from a necromancer as the little scary friend you see in the trailer isn't a ghost, but instead a voidsent. Voidsent are the former inhabitants of The Thirteenth shard (the one lost to the flood of darkness, and the one we visit briefly in the World of Darkness raid) They were twisted up by the overabunsance of umbral energy and transformed into voidsent similarly to how sineaters were formed by an excess of astral energy on The First.

I know it's a voidsent. I was commenting on necromancers in general in gaming. It's not always a skeleton or zombie or ghost. Sometimes it is some otherworldly eldritch being which is something more like the voidsent.

I reiterate what I put before, the important part in bold.

There's too much coincidence for it to not be intentional.

I'm sorry, maybe I just haven't been following the conversation well enough, but can you lay out for me the too many coincidences please?

Can we stop arguing over whose more useful, the pot or the kettle? Their both useful just as both theories on the inspiration are just that. Theories, unless the team comes out and says 'This inspired this' its a theory all the same.

This thread was for the suggestion of a whip wielding Exorcist Job not arguments about the inspiration for Reaper. EXORCIST not Reaper.

Soge01: That would be awesome! Though since we already have two job classes that use staves, maybe utlitising the old wands both White and Black Mage used to have would be better? As for the design, maybe Mhachi caster/healer gear could work. Like, maybe your Exorcist could have been originally founded in Mhach in order have someone that primarily helps bind and seal voidsent, along with exorcising them from any civilians they possess.
It's possible though for the class to work wouldn't we need an original tool? I agree staves have been used in abundance. But I can't really think of what else an exorcist might use. Hmmm maybe a hammer like the War Hammer's Templar's used. Come to think of it Templar Knights were said to be akin to protectors for priests and might have learned how to exorcise spirits and voidsent from those possessed by them. The only problem there is Templar's were known to be holy crusaders of the church, hardly what one might call an 'Edgelord'...

If an exorcist class were to exist, I'd imagine it would take some cues from Yuna in X, and the Hingashi Geomancers. Maybe it would incorporate the dances Yuna did when she sent spirits back to the Farplane.

Then what would be the opposite of a Templar Knight? Maybe the hammer could be slammed against the earth, temporarily opening up a coffin like gate to the void or some part of Mhach to temporarily summon slave voidsent to use powerful attack to decimate enemies before being forcefully pulled back into the coffin-like gates and sealed up again by tendril like chains jutting out from inside the gate. Or even using the same technique, opening a special gate to the void or some part of Mhach,, but in a different way to raise allies by flooding their body with corrupt aether sealed within, thus reviving them, though with some side effects.

*Snaps fingers* Got a name for the job maybe! What if it was called Crypt Lurker, Crypt Binder or Crypt Sealer? Or maybe those would be better used as names for forms of attacks or abilities. xD Ooh! I got it! Crypt Keeper!

Maybe Crypt Keepers could have derived themselves from Templar Knights some many years after learning the secrets of healing and exorcism from priests. But instead of using their new found powers in the usual way priests used them, the Templar Knighrs started experimenting with them, eventually learning how to bind spirits, voidsent and even the walking dead to their wills. Thus birthing the first Crypt Keepers, who would carry large modifed hammers to strike at flat surfaces around them to open gates that would bring their servants to them when needed to provide protection, buffing support for allies or deabilitating or outright killing enemies that stood in their way.

Sorry, for the long post. My brain is burnt and insomnia won't let me sleep. Though I hope this post at least made sense.
