I would not call this a necro thread, the amount of views alone, show a gap that many people is not happy about, and also DPS meters should not be the crutch you need to be able to do savage/extremes and Ultimates with.

WoW didn't invent dps meters. I've seen them as far back as FFXI, and I know for a fact that ACT was originally built to work with Everquest.

DPS Meters are essential to this game. Without logs, it would be much harder to name and shame wallet legends.

It's probably more accurate to say that DPS meters became mainstream around the time that enrage timers were added. Before MMOs existed we had speed runners, pro-gamers, and other types emerging back in the 90s. When the first MMOs appeared some of these people also participated in those titles, and the DPS meters were there to help judge performance. Achievement systems didn't even exist in full force until the mid 2000s, which also were made to appeal to that kind of audience.

The big reason SE doesn't add them natively to the game is that they do not want to market their game to the wrong audience. Publicly accepting damage meters means they understand there is a competitive community, and no matter what they do, that community will exist in their game in some form. Adding them to the game means that they want to promote that community and by extension the savage content, which I'd say doesn't really need further promotion. It's sort of the same way with PvP: I'd say that competitive gaming and PvP in general are very stormy waters to navigate, and no one wants to be WoW 2.0 right now. I mean even competitive players that so much as take a short break have a headache getting back into that game. I know people in my static that basically never want to go back.

Odd, I have never felt it necessary or appropriate to "name and shame" anyone.

You do not go out of your way to publically humiliate anyone. Ever.

From my perspective, if you’re in content with a DPS check and the leader notices you’re doing subpar damage - they maintain the right to kick you as long as they remain deathly silent about it beforehand. It leaves the person who had the issues largely clueless as to why they were kicked while protecting the party lead and the decent party members from being reported. The moment you tell someone they have low DPS is the moment where you’re putting yourself at risk. Stay silent and kick folk who aren’t making the cut. Ain’t no need to fuss about it prior.

In fairness, you don't need a meter to tell when someone is underperforming. If you know how a job functions, just watching a person go about their rotation (or a lack thereof) can be enlightening. How fast or slow an enemy health bar drops can also tell a bit of a story.

I’m in agreement that it is fairly obvious when certain jobs aren’t performing to standard. But unsolicited advice is often unwelcome. And by level eighty if a SAM isn’t putting up their buffs and the SMN isn’t laying down their DOTs halfway into the fight then there’s not much to be done about it.

And if it’s bad enough to where tanks or healers are out dpsing a DPS - I have seen a SMN be outpaced by a Gunbreaker in Extreme - then kicking is the best solution.
