Visiting classic Final Fantasy worlds in FFXIV

In the recent post by Yoshida regarding the implementation of a new server merger plan, he mentions future content in which we will visit* worlds from previous Final Fantasy games.

Also, as we look to expand FFXIV, some of our visions for the future, such as releasing content based in Worlds from previous FF titles, will require us to use names previously reserved for Worlds as names of cities and other locations instead.

Curious about the community's thoughts on this direction, I certainly had not expected it.

*[Edit: As pointed out by a fellow forum goer, it seems more likely that "content based in" refers to content derived from previous worlds, not set within them.]

I really hope they wont play the nostalgia card too much. Gold saucer is cute, but if a new city would pop up named Cosmo Canyon (for example), and design it after the FFVII one, I'd just think it'd be lazy.

Who am I kidding. I would drown in my own fountain of fan-boy tears and take the first best choco caravan out there and relive EVERYTHING!!!
Still, it's better to pump new and fresh content into Eorzea, since that is what it's primarily lacking.

What I wouldn't mind at all, however, would be if the end game bosses from the old games were introduced gradually into the future colosseum. Let you fight them with FFXIV mechanics and graphics, and now with friends that aren't just pixels!

I wouldn't mind references to towns from previous games, but to name whole cities in FFXIV after those from previous games seems a bit unoriginal. While I'd like to see FFXIV remain a Final Fantasy game, I'd prefer it to be its own FF with its own unique cities, just like all other Final Fantasies that came before it.

From the wording of it, it seems as though we'd literally be visiting the worlds from previous games, not just cities named after locales from them.

Maybe SE thinks people can find nostalgia in another way, since they are not using locations as server names anymore.

I'd be down for some cross dimensional shit. Everyone has their favorite FF game, and having the chance to experience pieces of it online might be fun.
