I like the way FFXI handled the initial primal fights; you could solo them as summoner with the tiny fork items. (Those items are likely still in my inventory if I started up my character again)

The level 20 summoner battles were NOT part of the initial primal fights. They were introduced later, when it was realized that new players running summoner who didn't have level-capped buddies to call for help had no way to get his avatar summons.
