While I can definitely see the resemblance, I do wish it had a bit more of the greenery it had in the concept art.

No the cherry trees didnt make much sense, but they 'fixed' the ugliness of the map. As far as desert settings go, nothing about that map looks 'desert'. Its a terrible representation of the desert. Should have dirt walkways and cactus
Why "should" it have dirt paths? They're quite capable of working out how to pave a street if they want to.
There's more to deserts and arid settings than just dirt and cactus.
Plus there's a difference between "built in a desert" and "looks like a desert".
Not every desert has cacti, in fact there's a TV Trope for that. And besides it's obvious The Goblet's design space is "oasis" rather than "dusty western town" like you're implying and I for one love how it looks, yeah yeah I know "OPINIONS" but that's all this thread is. What some folks find to be an ugly housing district others find it to be beautiful.
I would have liked they add a lot of lush desert vegetation like palm trees or cacti. Like a lot more, in line with a “garden of Babylon” kinda feel than it is now.
At the very least it should have an overly tended “golf course” kinda feel with lots of shrubs and irrigation going on, like Palm Springs or Southern California.
In game example, I would have liked to see it as lush as the Forgotten Springs area.
The "overtended golf course" thing isn't some kind of minimum, it's a specific approach that isn't what they're going for here. The house lawns are quite green though.I would have liked they add a lot of lush desert vegetation like palm trees or cacti. And "as lush as Forgotten Springs" isn't really much of a target. The town has a lot of brown rock and brown stone buildings mixed in with the bushy bits along the river, and if anything it's a rough version of exactly the climate that the Goblet is going for. More paving means less patches of scrub and grass, but the plants are very similar and the Goblet actually has a lot of ponds and well-watered garden beds spread through it. I would guess that they can't have the full-on overflowing with vegetation design as in the concept art because they do ultimately need to be able to load the place with all the custom-decorated houses about.
It's also designed on a style of location that just doesn't tend to have a lot of trees around. The image galleries on these pages capture something of it as a start:

It's just the sort of feel they're going for, to me. I don't expect it to have trees.
You’re not wrong on what they were going for; I was arguing that what they were going for kinda missed the mark for me, and what I would have gone with.
I would have gone more along the lines of Guildwars 2’s Vabbi
(example image)
I mean, Ul’dah is supposed to be extremely opulent and wealthy, so I expect there should be that kind of feel to the zone, not dry and barren for the most part.
There is still fierce competition on populated worlds just to get an undesirable plot in the Goblet, simply because of being able to relocate. For example, when I won my house I was actively clicking the placard in the Goblet with several other players... at 1 am est.The Goblet fulfills an important part in the current housing system: Because it is so ugly it is the only housing district where you can click on the placard for 15 hours without the fear that someone comes in and snaps the plot away to relocate their house o.o/
It is the entrance level housing district. Once you have a house there you then try to go to the next level and relocate into a more beautiful district. And when that is done you can try to upgrade further by relocating to an M or L plot (but don't make that mistake to buy an M or L plot in the Goblet, they are only for the few people who don't care or maybe actual like it there).
I think part of the problem is, yes it doesn't look much like an oasis, and because you are pretty much in the Grand Canyon. The Goblet gives you a beautiful view... of an arid cliff side. Even with more greenery I feel like in general it could have been done better.

Honestly I do wish they'd extend the remodel they did of the interior across the entire map. It feels kinda disjointed otherwise.
