I did not like either of them in ARR, but playing through all of the story and the side quests and especially Coil...their characters grow so much. I love them both now and they, along with precious cat boy (Graha), are always my trust group. I wish I had more chances with them and I love the storylines when it is just Alisaie and I. Plus, they are older than they look.

If FFXIV were a console game, Alphinaud would have made a fantastic main protagonist. Being a pet using healing class would be quite the changeup for SE, and something I would love to see them do. It is true that he starts out as a pompous runt, which only goes to show how much development he has received from then until now, as he is nearly a completely different character. He has retained some of his more redeemable features from early on like the strong connection he shares with his sister, and valuing the WoL for more than just their strength, and his carbuncle.

As a character whose hardships are more mental than they are physical, he is very relatable. He gets a thumbs up from me.

I am the 1% who really likes Alphinaud. He's been one of very few characters with a notable, continuous character arc.

The WoL is ordered around by everyone. Its the one issue I have with the game's story. You're supposed to be the main character but are often used an errand boy/girl.

I really do like Alphie though. He is one of the characters that does show a lot of development throughout the overall story arcs. Starting off as an annoying know-it-all and later becoming a confident leader of the sorts. You really notice this in ShB with Vaulthry.

On the other hand, I personally find his sister incredibly annoying.

He definetly gets a lot more tolerable after ARR, but still... I feel like in big part, the reason that Alphinaud is so dislikable is not Alphinaud's character itself, but rather everyone around him. How am I to believe that Minfilia is useful or our leader, for example, if I haven't played 1.0 and every time that Alphinaud opens his mouth she is shocked by his ideas and asks him what to do?
If he was a fellow adventurer without these tendencies to just...lead (pretty much like he is after heavensward), he's ok.

Bad take, not sure how anyone could find Alisaie unlikeable. Especially after the coil story, and seeing her beat up Alphinaud on a regular basis.
