    SPOILER ALERT

    Irony is, it's
amazing just how many subtle references to FFXIV there are in FFVIIR *cough cough* (in case you're wondering, FFVII Remake Episode 1 was released early in certain PAL territories due to the pandemic which included my home country Australia so I got it too . Like a certain boss fight having an attack literally called 'Heavensward' (all one word, just like the FFXIV expansion title), or the Sephiroth clones stealing their robes from the Ascians). And that is a good thing.
So a crossover with FFVII to coincide with the first episode of the Remake's release makes perfect sense (and even not including that Yoshi considers FFVII his personal favourite FF game.

As to when such an event will occur, your guess is as good as mine, but May/June would be a pretty likely time as there are no normal seasonal events usually running at that time (April has the Easter event, July has the Summer event, and August the Rising/FFXIV ARR release anniversary event, so there is a slight gap for such an event - the FFXV event occurred around this particular point in the year). Either way, we'll find out.

Anyway, my personal preference for a hypothetical FFVIIR crossover event with FFXIV would be Cloud and Aeris's outfits, along with weapons of course (we already have FFVII minions on the Mogstation so that's out). Maybe some more FFVII music - the only FFVII tracks currently in the game are the remixes of Gold Saucer and Electric de Chocobo, so maybe an orchestrion roll for that awesome new remix of Still More Fighting? As for weapons, these are my picks (copied and pasted from an earlier thread on the same subject):

GLA/PLD: the Enhanced Sword Zack used for most of Crisis Core that seems to be standard SOLDIER weaponry (that Cloud also used), along with a Shinra riot shield labelled 'Shinra Alpha' which was an armour type in FFVII -
(incidentally, certain Shinra trooper enemies actually use such a shield in FFVIIR)
    .
CNJ/WHM: Aeris's Guard Stick as mentioned, or else her Princess Guard or Umbrella!
THM/BLM: Aeris's Wizard Rod or Striking Staff
LNC/DRG: Cid's Venus Gospel or Mop
PGL/MNK: Tifa's Leather Glove or Premium Heart
MRD/WAR: Cid's Mast Axe or Viper Halberd
ARC/BRD: Cait Sith's Megaphone or Marvellous Cheer (reimagined as a bow with the horn of the megaphone the arrow quiver!), or else Minerva's Bow from Crisis Core
ACN/SMN/SCH: Red XIII's Limited Moon (reimagined as a book, much like how Hope's FFXIII weapon was a 'book' here in FFXIV)
ROG/NIN: Yuffie's Twin Vipers, reimagined as twin blades
MCH: Vincent's Cerberus from Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus, as the name for both his starting weapon and ultimate weapon are already in the game (Quicksilver is a lvl 50 MCH gun and Death Penalty is the name of one of Merlwyb's pistols)
AST: Barret's Missing Score, believe it or not, reimagined as a star globe (the Missing Score had an angel wing motif on it and the 'score' in the name does suit a card deck)
DRK: NOT Cloud's Buster Sword (as that is already in the game as the lvl 1 and 2 melee DPS Limit Break), but instead Cloud's Hardedge from FFVII, the Ultima Weapon from FFVII, or his 'First Sword' from Advent Children
SAM: NOT Sephiroth's Masamune, as I'm certain SE are carefully keeping that in reserve for later inclusion in the game (given it's a reoccuring weapon throughout the series), so instead, either Cloud's Yoshiyuki or Murasame blades.
RDM: Genesis's rapier from Crisis Core (as the name is unknown perhaps calling it 'Loveless Rapier' or 'Genesis's Rapier'?)
    BLU: Aeris's Aurora Rod
GNB: the Velvet Nightmare gunblade Kadaj and the Remnants used in Advent Children
DNC: Yuffie's Conformer, reimagined as a pair of chakra.

These are just my own ideas though so please add your own choices!

I would rather they spent time developing content for FFXIV instead of crossover content.

But if they absolutely can't control themselves and have an overwhelming compulsion to take resources away from FFXIV focused content, at least FF7 is still Final Fantasy.

Crossover content for FFXIV is content for FFXIV, though...

One of the main points of most Final Fantasy games is in the references to previous titles.

It's not like we're struggling to get content that isn't standalone for FFXIV either.

Crossover content is crossover. It's not Eorzea/Garlemald/Norvrandt. Just because it's content that is IN the game does not mean it is FFXIV content. You know what I mean. *bonks Theodric*

If I'm not mistaken, FFVII remake will have an FFXIV event, then we can expect an FFVII event.

I just cannot see SE passing up the opportunity to market their newest big release to the FF14 playerbase. I think it is more likely that the event would be onesided than for it to not exist at all.

I wouldn't even be surprised if the FF14 dev team has already developed the event and items and is just waiting for FF7R's official release to push a patch with them.

If we do get a crossover event, I hope we just fight a robot or a monster instead of Sephiroth. I'm so tired of his *smirks and appears behind you to say cryptic bullshit before disappearing* act. He's as bad as Xehanort to me now.

I don't expect we fight Sepiroth (the primal or an avatar from FFVII). FFXIII it was an avatar of Bahamut (fate), FFXV, it was Garuda. It sounds reasonable to me to expect similar event. Maybe we could also have something different, a side quest related to the Ancient Forest.

Or maybe... some kind of boss that provides Cloud some kind of special limit break.

References aren't the same as crossovers. First is written to function as a new thing within the XIV's setting and lore(which is the standard practice for the series) and the other is ripping characters and designs straight out of another game and shoving them into XIV without much effort to make it feel like part of the world.

For example Crystal Tower in Eorzea isn't the same as Crystal Tower form FFIII - it has its own origin and purpose that's based in one of XIV's ancient civilizations and their lore. Same goes for characters which share names with other games.
On the other hand Noctis from XV event is literally just FFXV Noctis with zero changes whatsoever, pulled from his own game with some crossover magic, isekai-style.

It's okay if people like crossovers, but trying to equate them with regular "Final Fantasy gotta Final Fantasy" references to dismiss those who prefer original lore, is dishonest and annoying.

As for VII - current weapon quest line is a properly done reference - they're using the iconic FFVII enemies while giving them completely new lore that fits XIV and expands upon existing story and concepts.
