Oh yeah, the media has been crying wolf for so long now that very few people take them seriously. So I get it, but it is unfortunate that we have reached this point at all. They're technically in the wrong, though equally they probably would be more inclined to take it seriously if not for every minor issue in the world being made out to be the worst thing ever by the media and educators. Because when an actual disaster comes along a lot of people tune out because they no longer believe that the 'wolf' is real.
I'd have to side with the idea that if you've caught the virus and can't log in due to financial reasons, then you have more important issues to worry about than a virtual house. I wouldn't want to lose my in-game house either, but if I'm in financial straits my subscription is the least of my worries behind being able to eat and keeping the lights on for however long I need to. You can always come back afterwards.

If I couldn't afford to maintain my sub I would start look into moving all my high value furniture out into my apartment / retainers to be stored and accept that my house would likely not be there when I return.
I have lost a house prior to this because I couldn't afford to maintain the sub when I was younger and I stored all my furniture prior to the sub lapsing since the house could be re-bought again eventually but some furniture are limited so I didn't want to lose them.
Wow. The lack of empathy on this thread is simply horrible. People always praise FFXIV community but this forum, as always, is clearly something else.
Empathy for what exactly? If someone was on the verge of losing their actual house due to this situation then that would be understandably distressing and worth empathy. Losing an intangible, unnecessary commodity is not even remotely tangential. Focus on maintaining your IRL livelihood before worrying about your virtual one.

It has, unfortunately, become very common for some very vocal individuals to try and shame others into agreeing with everything they say or else they'll be branded as being a 'bigot' or 'lacking in empathy'. Luckily the tide is turning and such tricks are no longer as successful as they once were.
Ultimately this matter, like so many others, is merely something for players to agree to disagree on.
To be fair, it's just a few people that are replying on the forums this way and they are hardly representative of the community.
Let's not blame a few people for the whole community.
Just because people aren't blindly agreeing with the idea of suspending the demo timers doesn't mean they lack empathy. More likely they're putting that empathy where it belongs - on things that actually matter in this time of crisis.
You want to show real empathy? Help make certain that low income seniors in your area who were relying on communities centers for meals are still getting meals somehow. That neighbors who might be unable to leave their homes for other reasons are still getting the things they need. Be the voice of calm reason for friends and family who are feeling panic at this sudden drastic change to their normal lives. That's the empathy that counts.
It's not SE's responsibility to make up for life being unfair and setting this crisis on the world. Those who planned ahead to be prepared for a disaster so they have the financial means to keep playing shouldn't be penalized and locked out of content for the sake of those who won't be playing because they couldn't be bothered to be prepared.
Worried about your game house because you can't pay your sub? Surely you must know someone who'd be wiling to give you $15 as an act of empathy so you can keep your sub going for another month.
Funny cause I haven't said any opinion regarding the housing timers. I don't have one, I don't want one and I don't care about that nor have any strong opinion on that. Doesn't change the fact that the thread is full of yes, bigots without emphaty that only know how to throw the word "entitled" over and over again, riding their high horses, protecting their pixels rights.
I'm leaving this thread because it's making me nauseous reading all those long arguments of how people are prepared to deal with disasters are being "penalized" if SE decides to turn off housing timers because of something bad happening in the world (something that they did several times). Let's not even start with the "corona is not a big deal" comments because honestly...
Just wanted to give my 2 cents and shame y'all for a little bit (using the term that was given to my comment, of course) because yes, you should be ashamed. Remember to wash your hands. Sorry for those who stay and try to reason with people that can't look beyond themselves. Also sorry for anyone that, such as myself, lost their time reading all of this selfish gibberish.
I don’t think Melorie’s post is any more condescending than the “worry about your irl problems before worrying about your virtual ones, lollll” posts. It’s surprising, I know, but people can worry about multiple things of varying import simultaneously. I have yet to see anyone be like “why is SE making me choose between feeding my family and keeping my sub?”. You can have big problems and still be concerned about something minor. Many people latch on to small comforts, tangible and intangible, during rough patches.
As a company that serves a lot of people, they obviously can’t make an exception for every personal crisis. However, they have a track record of doing this during times of larger scale strife. Regardless of how anyone personally feels about the response to the virus, it’s impacting the player base at a global level. Whether it be temporary layoffs or actually falling ill. What a lovely surprise, when they get back on their feet, to log in and find the house that they made memories in, worked hard to obtain, and spent life minutes decorating is still there!
It wouldn’t be hurting anyone and seems fairly easy for the team to implement. I see no harm in asking for it and fully support it if they do!
