My alliance list is left, next to my mini map and my party list is below my map, above the chat windows.

0 clicks! I greatly recommend you take the time to invest in which keys you could use conveniently and optimally, makes for much better experience. I used to also click sometimes until I determined to change all hotbars and dedicate to finding optimal keys in good reach, took a little while to find it but was well worth it!
This will definitely come down to personal preference, but these are the keys I use:
I have full button layout that I find convenient for every job (except for Dragoon & Red Mage), if someone wants to see one, let me know! Tbh "button bloat" and getting creative with optimal key assignments is one of my favorite things about this game due to its abundance of abilities (compared to most other MMO's).

The ultrawide gives more real estate huh? I am thinking of going ultra wide tooMine's pretty minimalistic.
On an ultrawide now, but still the same setup. Enemy list on right of central bars.
Focus in line and left of Target.
My cast bar in line with Focus cast bar, above Target and Target cast bar.
My status bar above abilities and just below, item by item, Target status bar.
Unless I need to read the chat window, it, too, is usually off.
All job-swap and auxiliary bars are on a fly-out command via one of the less handy buttons on my MMO mouse. I click what I want, then close it again.
My other HUD puts the enemy list and party list nearer to each other on the left while shuffling abilities further to the right, with the most important to track being leftmost rather than topmost.
And i am actually really liking urs too. I kinda wanna know how u set up the mouse trick you mentioning here...i might be able to clean up more if i know how to do that..i have the razer naga..i use the buttons for my abilities...and they pretty full..so i probably wont be able to the the mouse trick u mentioned

I am really liking how urs is setup..are u using a widescreen monitor?So...
I use a razor orbweaver with my keys in a grid of 5 across and 4 down... everything keybound with 2 keys acting as modifers (shift and control)... so... I don't need the icons except for noting cooldowns I'm not mentally aware of the timing on...
As such:

Keep the screen free of clutter...
Layout config:
I seem to have a real lack of screenshots taken in combat, so here's one from a month ago (feb 2), taken by accidentally hitting the button most likely... You can see that my own buffs are too close the boss's debuffs blocking me from seeing the timer (because unlike in WoW, I can't move where the timer shows up...). I've since move them apart from each other a bit to fix that:

How many men am I involved with? Well that depends... do you mean men as in males? Or just midlanders?
The centre buttons are those around WASD (like E and Q) and the others are bound to my mouse, so that's why it's seemingly weird like Ctrl+X adn Ctrl+B. The ones in the middle are for those i need to keep an eye on, so basically my oGCD attacks and such.
2.0 Veteran from 2013. Just looking to be helpful. DRK is Love, DRK is life.
(Ignore the levels on my character card, the tool i used to make it hasn't been updated for 4.0)
I actually have more trouble making frequent use of the side buttons for actions than using my keyboard and mod keys. The ultrawide gives more real estate huh? I am thinking of going ultra wide too

My MMO mouse tends to use only the first row of 3 for abilities (spammables and things I need especially responsive like Edge of Shadow, Flood of Shadows, and then a macroed form of TBN to co-tank; CnS, AD, macroed SE on Shift; Blood Weapon, Delirium, and Living Shadow on Alt; etc.), while the rest goes to shared functions (auto-run, flyout menu button, and party selection).
Movement is just QWSE, with A and D moved to Q and E respectively, so I have F1F2F3F4 (top-stretch), 12345 (top), RTYG (index) , ADFZXC (drop-down), and VB (thumb) all within easy reach. Caps has been turned into right alt, so I have easy access to that for my F and number keys. Order goes from modded to most comfortable mod key, then downward from there. (1-5 go Caps/Alt, Shift, Ctrl while ADF go Shift, Ctrl, Alt and ZXC.) I could make do just with just the keyboard and the first three buttons of my mouse if needed (and given how often my USB ports fail, causing the computer not to recognize any but the first three, that seems fairly necessary).
The mouse trick is to simply have a keybound macro among the normally hidden bars which will unhide them (bars 5-10 in my case). You can then hit the same key again or click the macro to hide them again.
