    Hello

No, nothing happened to the device before the issue began. I only really use it to play FFXIV and usually have Chrome open too.

I already deleted the locally-saved data previously and this did not help

    In response to your message:

    1) Make sure that your hardware is not overheating and remove any overclocks you may have on your graphics card or processor. Please check that any fans or vents are clear of blocks. - I do not have any overclocks. I cleared the vents last weekend, but they were not really dusty. I tried underclocking, but this did not help

    2) Disable any additional programs that could cause interference with the game itself including chat programs. Also, remove any custom configurations made using graphics driver-level programs. - I had already done this before reporting. See first post.

    3) Turn off Fullscreen Optimizations. Find the executable file for the game (normally found in the install folder), right-click it and select 'Properties'. Under the 'Compatibility' tab, check the box labeled 'Disable Fullscreen Optimizations', then click 'Apply'. - I have now tried this. I will test it tomorrow and reply.

    4) Remove any unnecessary USB or audio devices (controllers, headphones, flash drives etc.) - I do not have any of these

Thanks for the reply - I will see how it goes tomorrow and respond.

Hello, I have now tried option 3 above. This has not worked either - I have played for approx 1 hour 30 mins and have had around 5 crashes.

    Please help with this problem!

    Thanks

Good afternoon and thank you for the reply.

Are you able to delete the locally saved content (My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy)? Additionally, please try lowering the resolution in game and on your PC.

Thank you for visiting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Hi, sorry, haven't had a chance to get back to this until today. I tried this and it didn't make any difference (I had to put the data back afterwards) and I already tried lowering the resolution previously.

Do you know what is causing the issue? Is it my graphics card?

    Thanks

Not part of SquareEnix support, just trying to be helpful, but:

A friend had precisely this sort of issue with DX11 almost exactly a month ago, with constant frequent crashes that seemingly only cropped in FFXIV; everything else looked to be running without issue. She tried swapping to DX9 for FFXIV instead of DX11 (even though the DX9 client is no longer officially supported) and it worked without crashing, though there were caveats—gpose didn't work right, not every enemy always loaded in during the second fight of the Copied Factory, etc. In the end it wasn't terribly playable for her. However, it narrowed down the problem somewhat, and eventually doing a DX11-specific burn-in test surfaced that there was a hardware issue on her motherboard; FFXIV just happened to be the one thing that tripped the issue. She replaced the motherboard of her computer with a new one—kept everything else the same; storage, memory, graphics card—and the issue went away.

It might be worth trying to use the DX9 client just to see if you witness the same sort of behavior (eliminating the crash); that would at least narrow it down to DX11-specific and give you an avenue to investigate, even if the no-longer-officially-supported DX9 client isn't nearly as playable for FFXIV as DX11 long-term.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

Yes, I have switched to DX9, as this is the only way I can play at the moment. As you say it is ‘ok’ to play in DX9, but not great - I can’t use the expanded inventory for example and it just doesn’t look as smooth, but at least I can play. Sometimes it freezes up a bit, but I don’t get the Fatal Error.

I hope it’s not the motherboard, but I’m really running out of ideas

So, you've narrowed it down to probably being DX11, at least. If you haven't already, I'd try the complete-removal-and-reinstall with graphics drivers; not just uninstall from the Windows control panel, but one of those programs that cleans up all traces of Nvidia or AMD's driver bundle—the programs, the added control panel extensions, the drivers themselves—to let you install entirely clean. It's at least an easy step to take to test, and if that works, yay! But I admit, I don't think it's likely to. It's just worth doing to eliminate the possibility; if it doesn't work, you know it's probably not the driver install that's messed up.

The next step I'd take—which is admittedly difficult—would be swapping out the graphics card temporarily; if you've got a friend willing to swap cards for a little bit, it's worth trying. If the game runs without crashing on your machine—or starts crashing on theirs—then you're pretty sure it's the graphics card that's got an issue. If the game runs fine on their machine or continues to crash on yours, at least you've eliminated the graphics card. My aforementioned friend, her husband temporarily sacrificed his video card and saw the crashes continue on her machine, while putting her card in his, he could still play fine. This is the point where it became clear it was worth testing the motherboard and the issue was found.

Unfortunately, if you don't have a convenient way to swap out the graphics card, I don't know that I have a good solution which doesn't involve spending money; this is the point where I'd recommend using PassMark BurnInTest to make sure all of your hardware is working right... but if you don't already have BIT, it's $59. Which might be a bit much for a one-off use. And I don't know what the limitations on their free trial are. (Technically you probably can use any decent burn-in test here, it's just that PassMark's sort of the gold standard—and has been for about 22 years—so I don't really have any good personal recommendations on alternatives; I've just always used PassMark.)

And if all else fails, maybe one of the SquareEnix support folks will show up with something to try beyond these.

Good morning and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

JessBobbles, unfortunately, the device information in the provided System Report do indicate that the laptop being used does not meet the minimum specifications required to play FINAL FANTASY XIV most notably the Intel(R) HD Graphics Family chipset. We do not support Intel graphics cards for FINAL FANTASY XIV. However, I did notice there is an NVIDIA device that is not listed as the primary graphics card. This suggests that you may be running NVIDIA Optimus which controls whether your system utilizes the base Intel card or the NVIDIA card to conserve battery power. Please try disabling NVIDIA Optimus and see if the error persists. For instructions on how to force the NVIDIA card to be enabled or to disable Optimus, please contact NVIDIA Support.

Thank you for visiting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Thanks for coming back to me PacketDancer

I had already used a package to completely remove all traces of the graphics drivers and reinstalled from the NVIDIA website, but no go.

I’m playing on a laptop, so I don’t think I can swap the GPU right? I don’t have any friends with gaming PC’s/laptops who could help. I assume if it is the GPU, I’d be looking at a new laptop?

I’ve just downloaded the Passmark BurnInTest trial version (free for 30 days) which has both a 3D and 2D graphics test, it’s now running and I’ll update the output.

Today I tried removing my SSD and reinstalling clean windows and the game on the HDD, but it didn’t work.

Thanks for your help and advice
