Never owned a console, but I suppose one solution there would be to just plant the target at max distance in the direction you're facing, with the option to move it around with a joystick button, then press another to go. (Same for keyboard & mouse)I really like this suggestion.
Especially trying to do this on a console, I find that it takes me just as long to set up my target as it would take for me to actually just walk that distance without sprinting. I only ever use it as a dash in if I've been required to move away for an extended time.

It doesn't work quite that way on console, if you change the angle you're viewing the field at, the reticle will move closer or further from you, meaning if you've got your camera angled wrong, it will either be out of range, or too close, and by the time you adjust for that, you might as well have just run there on your own. It doesn't move with just a joystick since one of them is used to move your character and the other is used to rotate the camera, you have to do additional button inputs that also make you need to stand still in order to adjust where you're going.
This is also why other moves like Salted Earth and formerly Shadow Flare used to get macroed by console players
